Mrs Rosie and the Priest | Giovanni Boccaccio
12 posts | 16 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Four hilarious and provocative stories from Boccaccio's Decameron, featuring cuckolded husbands, cross-dressing wives and very bad priests. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). Boccaccio's Decameron is available in Penguin Classics in both a complete and selected edition.

4/5🌟
This is actually four stories from a larger work called The Decameron. The first story had had me giggling, the second both made me laugh and made me angry, the third was just like 😬, and the last was horrifying. Really, really attention grabbing. I gave it four stars just because that third story was so bawdy that it made me uncomfortable, lol.

I wasn't going to read anything until my library hold became available, but here we are. I mean, what else am I supposed to do while I drink tea?

4 stars feels a bit dramatic, but 3 1/2 seemed too little. A collection of amusing tales of doomed loves and risky affairs. A fun read with some strong willed women (for the time period), and comic heroes and villains to boot. A good little read ☺🧡

Decided it was about time I catch up on my reviews because I almost always forget at the time 😉

Brandon and I went thrift shopping yesterday for my birthday in Fort Wayne! We were going through our haul today and I pulled this slip of paper out of a book we bought! 😲 Is this cool or creepy? Or both?

#bookhaul #birthdayhaul

SassyBookworm I think both cool and creepy!!! 🤓 6y
biblio_ginger @Chrysta23 I definitely agree! 😉 6y

From the back cover: "Bawdy tales of pimps, cuckolds, lovers, and clever women." I had already read one of these four stories (Patient Griselda) but the rest were new to me. It makes me want to read the rest of the Decameron.

vivastory Do You own the penguin little black classic set? 7y
Brie @vivastory I do. I've decided to work my way through them this summer. 7y
vivastory @brie I've only read a few from the set (Chekhov, Flaubert & Katherine Mansfield) but I greatly enjoyed them. Penguin has published 46 more black classics since the set of 80 was released. Hopefully there will be a second set soon. 7y

I was not expecting this collection to be as fun as it was! Really enjoyed the stories that were often very witty and cheeky and will be adding Decameron to my TBR

Finally making a start on this beautiful collection...I actually really enjoyed these short stories. They were much funnier than I was expecting (which probably says more about my knowledge of 14th century literature than the book itself) The Decameron is going on my to read list so It's a thumbs up!

OSChamberlain God that collection is so hot 😍😍😍 8y
Whatshereadnext They've brought the next 50 out but it's not a boxed collection 😩 8y

This was a strange collection of short stories full of daring escapes out of coffins, ever patient wives and priests who just want to get laid. Yeah. It was fun but I wasn't going crazy over it.
