Pope's Daughter
Pope's Daughter | Dario Fo
9 posts | 3 read | 31 to read
Lucrezia Borgia is one of the most vilified figures in modern history. The daughter of a notorious pope, she was twice betrothed before the age of eleven and thrice married one husband was forced to declare himself impotent and thereby unfit and another was murdered by Lucrezia s own brother, Cesar Borgia. She is cast in the role of murderess, temptress, incestuous lover, loose woman, femme fatale par excellence. But there is always more than one version of a story. Lucrezia Borgia is the only woman in history to serve as the head of the Catholic Church. She successfully administered several of the Renaissance Italy s most thriving cities, founded one of the world s first credit unions, and was a generous patron of the arts. She was mother to a prince and to a cardinal. She was a devoted wife to the Prince of Ferrara, and the lover of the poet Pietro Bembo. She was a child of the renaissance and in many ways the world s first modern woman. Dario Fo, Nobel laureate and one of Italy s most beloved writers, reveals Lucrezia s humanity, her passion for life, her compassion for others, and her skill at navigating around her family s evildoings. The Borgias are unrivalled for the range and magnitude of their political machinations and opportunism. Fo s brilliance rests in his rendering their story as a shocking mirror image of the uses and abuses of power in our own time. Lucrezia herself becomes a model for how to survive and rise above those abuses."

Lucrezia Borgia is an interesting person as the inside description of her shows. I loved reading about her. I had some issues with the narrative choice, sometimes the storyteller is really present in the novel and that pulled me out of the story at times. But other than that, this book was a hit with me.

Slajaunie Her whole family was very interesting to read about. 5y
AnneCecilie @Slajaunie The Borgias is definitely not your average family. I would definitely want to learn more about them. Thanks for the book recommendation @Birdsong28 5y

Crazeedi Omygoodness I read a book about her recently, in fact I've read 2 now I have to go find the author and recommend to you, I'm stacking this. The one was about the whole Borgia family, but she was the main character, fascination 5y
AnneCecilie @Crazeedi would love to get your recommendations. This is truly a fascinating family and I would love to learn more. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @AnneCecilie great writer imo anyway (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @AnneCecilie they were both good, 4and5 stars for me, this one published first 5y
AnneCecilie @Crazeedi thank you. I‘ve stacked “Blood and Beauty” and found out that I‘ve already stacked “In the Name of the Family”. Both seems interesting. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @AnneCecilie do you think we will ever read everything we desire to read?🤨 5y
AnneCecilie @Crazeedi Not really. There‘s just too many good books out there and too little time to read. So it‘s hard to prioritize what to read when. 5y
Crazeedi @AnneCecilie I hear you, and I'm such an eclectic reader, so the world of books is deep, wide, and high!😉 5y
AnneCecilie @Crazeedi I know what you mean. Sometimes I wish I only read certain genres to narrow the amount of interesting books down, but then I hear about a great book and I‘m happy that I don‘t. After all a good book is a good book, it doesn‘t matter what genre it‘s. 5y

Next up.

A novel about Lucrezia Borgia. I hadn‘t even heard about The Borgias until I watched the TV series with the same name a few years ago. Quite an interesting family.

speljamr This era of Machiavelli absolutely fascinates me, including this Pope and his family. 5y
AnneCecilie @speljamr me too. I even have a non-fiction book about her too. When I first started watching the series, I thought the creators had mixed several popes into one until I started googling 5y
Velvetfur Oohh I bet this is good, I need to read more about this crazy family, I've been meaning to for years so I'll stack this one 👍 5y

#backpackeurope I spent an interesting time in Italy with Lucrezia Borgia, but now it‘s time to move on. I‘m heading for Austria. This is the first book by Nobel Prize-winning author Dario Fo. I wonder what his other books are like. This one wasn‘t quite my cup of tea.

#backpackeurope I‘ve just arrived in Rome. I‘m looking forward to getting to know Lucrezia Borgia. (I just love Europa Editions!)

KellyHunsakerReads Can‘t wait for your thoughts. It sounds good. 6y
AAdamson @Hunsakermountain I didn‘t realize that the author won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997. 6y

On my TBR list. An amazing story about Lucrezia Borgia, the daughter of a pope and only female head of the Catholic Church. She has been cast as a murderess, temptress and femme fatale. But she also created the first credit union, helped save several Italian cities and was a patron of the arts.

Elisa Love. I was obsessed with Lucrezia Borgia when I was a teenager! People were always puzzled by my interest — I grew up in Italy and there her name is used much the same way as you use "black widow" ? 8y
KVanRead A book club friend read it and loved it! 8y
Sue Sounds awesome - my teen daughter is fascinated by the Borgias, I'm sure she would enjoy this too :) 8y
