In an unnamed country at the beginning of the last century, a child called Pavla is born to peasant parents. Her arrival, fervently anticipated and conceived in part by gypsy tonics and archaic prescriptions, stuns her parents and brings outrage and scorn from her community. Pavla has been born a dwarf, beautiful in face, but as the years pass, she grows no farther than the edge of her crib. When her parents turn to the treatments of a local charlatan, his terrifying cure opens the floodgates of persecution for Pavla. Little Nothing unfolds across a lifetime of unimaginable, magical transformation in and out of human form, as an outcast girl becomes a hunted woman whose ultimate survival depends on the most startling transfiguration of them all. Woven throughout is the journey of Danilo, the young man entranced by Pavla, obsessed only with protecting her. Part allegory about the shifting nature of being, part subversive fairy tale of love in all its uncanny guises, Little Nothing spans the beginning of a new century, the disintegration of ancient superstitions, and the adoption of industry and invention. With a cast of remarkable characters, a wholly original story, and extraordinary, page-turning prose, Marisa Silver delivers a novel of sheer electricity.

This is a hard one to describe—a dark, moody tale existing at the intersection of fairy tales & the modern Industrial Age. Taking place in a unnamed Eastern European country, it‘s the story of Pavla, a dwarf, & Danilo, the boy who loves her. There‘s nothing easy about either of their lives from the moment they meet when Pavla‘s parents try to stretch her into a normal height. Gorgeous, brooding writing (ok story) is just enough to make it a pick.

It seemed weird to me that I was more invested in and moved by the chapters dedicated to Danilo and not by the protagonist wolf-girl's chapters. In any case, I enjoyed this strange little meditation on time and the past.

"First the body and then the heart. Good night. Sleep tight. The bed bugs will surely bite." Fun fact about me. I'll read anything Lauren Groff writes and recommends. She blurbed this book & I'm excited.

I've just started reading Little Nothing and I am hooked! I don't have much to say about it yet, but I can't wait to read more! This I admit was a total cover buy... 😏 and so far, I'm glad I did buy it. I'm slowly making my way through my tbr shelf, and I hope to finish it before school starts again in the fall 🤞🏼

I'm surprised this one has such a low rating on Litsy, I thought it was a pitch-perfect modern fairy tale, a bit Grimm, a bit Pullman, a dash of Carter and Valente. It plays on all of the great folkloric traditions of transformation, ostracisation and redemption to explore how we use stories (and how stories use us!) to create and change identities.

It's unseasonably warm in Colorado this weekend, so naturally I'm cracking a beer and reading by the lake 👌🏻☀️😍
Update: one of the dogs I'm watching escaped the yard and I had to run through the neighborhood until I caught him 🙄😡

Book stats for January (seriously, people, how do you make yours so pretty?? I am a social media neophyte!)
12 books read. 1 non-fiction and only 3 romance/chick lit so I got out of my comfort zone. 👍

Lola Yes, I need a graphics lesson so I can make pretty mult-book posts. But yours looks good to me! 3y
Zelma There are apps that you can create lists and stats. I think Vanilla Pen and Pic Collage are two of them. 3y

This started kind of whacky, and it just keeps getting crazier. The part I'm at right now, I have this incredibly sad Phosphorescent song in my head because of the white wolf: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jH3C8FyHsIk

Okay, I picked. I can't get over this cover so that was my deciding factor!

saresmoore I love judging books by their covers! 3y
monkeygirlsmama My first thought when I see this cover is "coffee beans" so it automatically appeals to me. ? I'm a cover snob too, so I'm always judging books by the covers. ? 3y
mcipher @Saresse @monkeygirlsmama It's how I pick so many good library books "oooh, nice cover!!" ? 3y

Diwali desserts🎊 I was unable to sign in for two weeks😩
I'm not going to bother catching up on my reading in-between but I just finished this. It was good storytelling & engaging to read but it left me so unsatisfied that I have to just say So-So.

Written in "Fairy Tale" form, which I do love ❤️. A big unanswered question, which frustrated me. But not terrible. ???

Excerpt from my review: "Little Nothing felt like two different stories that I thoroughly enjoyed SEPERATLY, however did not think they flowed well together, making the book seem disjointed."

Just finished. Definitely one of those books for which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I'll be turning some of its themes and questions over in my head for quite a while.

CarolynOliver @MrBook It's really striking, and the design extends around the flaps so it looks pretty when being read. 3y
MrBook Someone actually a did a cover well. Great covers are popping up more and more, but they're still rare to me. 3y

Ugh....I had to make myself finish this one. Amateurish is the first word that comes to mind. There is no character development, no driving theme to the plot, and lots of pointless/gratuitous scenes. I really expected more, especially considering the author has several other books with great reviews.

Titania Bad book with cute cover. 3y
autumnprivett @Titania It's such a a cute cover! 3y
mdemanatee Good to know. I will lower this on my priority list and maybe give is a try after the fall pub push has calmed. 3y

This wasn't my favorite book. I loved the beginning and couldn't put it down and then as it went on, it became boring and hard to follow. There were too many characters and the author left too many questions unanswered. I just didn't like the style and the way it was written. Just okay for me.

The silence is so dense that it is just as hard on the baby's eardrums as any sound. It is the silence that will become the refrain, when a stranger falls speechless in the child's presence, or when a villager pushes her children behind her skirts...
