This was undeniably cute and steamy, but a few aspects got under my skin in the end. Sure, acting like lovesick teenagers is cute, but practical foreplay in front of Michael's family? Also, after Philip James forcibly kisses Stella, Michael's response is... to insist she kisses him? Nice ownvoices rep of ASD and a fun story overall, but those icky bits overshadowed the rest for me.

I would never know where I am in this book without @xicanti, which would be a shame because I'm learning a lot! It's making me think more deeply about learning and cognition issues and making me think about my own struggles with attention, memory, and addictive behaviors in a whole new light.

xicanti I'm glad Bookmark Maude has helped. 5y

I'm so torn on how to review this. It was a completely solid read, perfect for fans of psychological horror, alternating viewpoints, and fic in translation. Still, parts of it dragged, and I just don't know that it's going to stick to with me. This really *just* falls short of being a Pick for me.

Pretty sure I blew through this in 90 minutes, and I plan to do it all again on my plane ride home tomorrow. The tension and strangeness here reminded me so much of another favorite (ALL THE BIRDS, SINGING). Don't read anything about it before going in, and prepare to bite off every nail during this single sitting read.

This is my third try with this one, and I just can't sink into it. The writing isn't bad, but the pacing is far too slow. If you're into dark fantasy and toy shop themes, give it a go, but more straight-up horror fans can pass.

It's almost time for the #Readathon! Who else is participating on Saturday?

I'll be carving out some time to read DEADLINE by Mira Grant. I finally finished FEED this week, and I nearly tripped over myself to grab the second installment in her Newsflesh series. (Yes, even though it's an ebook. I am that clumsy.)

Ysabet It seems unfair that I can only like this once. 8y

Harking back to James Baldwin's searingly honest but hopeful pair of essays, THE FIRE THIS TIME picks up where he left off. Ward collected essays, articles and poetry to examine where black Americans have been, where they are now and where they hope one day to be. Two standouts are Claudia Rankine's piece on black mourning and Garnette Cadogan's essay on walking while black. Easy? No. Vital? Oh yes.

mostlycatsandcoffee I picked this up at the library this week! 8y
shainareads @aprilgress I wouldn't exactly say it'll be a fun read, but I think you'll be happy to have read it! 8y
kerry If I've not read the Baldwin, should I make a point to go back to it before starting this one? 8y
shainareads @kerry I don't think you need to, but you SHOULD read the Baldwin because it's awesome ;) 8y

I've got coffee, there's a gentle but persistent rain against the windows, and I'm ready to settle in for a long morning of reading. Happy weekend! What's on YOUR stack today?

P. S. I can't remember the last time I flew through such a long book so quickly! Mira Grant is a treasure.

theshrinkette Rereading The Fire This Time. 🙌 8y
shainareads @theshrinkette Excellent life decisions! I need to get a review or a mini up. 8y
Ysabet She's also terrifyingly prolific (with the bulk of her work coming out under the Seanan McGuire name), which is one of the many reasons I feel so lucky that she's my favorite author. (I basically love all of her work, although nothing else has claimed my heart to the extent Newsflesh has.) 8y

Ysabet (This is a separate comment because for some reason my Swype keyboard's Enter key is replaced with "Send" in Litsy.) I still have to pick my next book! I unexpectedly finished The Long Game in one gulp last night. 8y
jessicaesquire Have you read this series before? After i read FEED i almost didn't read the rest of the books because i couldn't believe they would be as good. (spoiler: they are.) 8y
Ysabet @jessicaesquire 💜💜💜💜💜 8y
shainareads @jessicaesquire This is my first time! I saw your review and wondered if you ever got around to the rest, good to know. 8y
shainareads @ysabet I'm excited to investigate what else she's written! FEED is such a good combo of horror and political thriller. 8y
GuninActOne @shainareads I'm obsessed with her books. Just reread Indexing for a fairy tale fix. Her Incriptyd series is my happy reading 8y
Ysabet @shainareads Her Mira Grant books are very distinct from the Seanan McGuire ones, and not just because of the "Grant = horror/sci-fi" / "McGuire = urban fantasy" branding. (The various McGuire series all feel pretty different from each other, too.) 8y
Heather_Reads Ok. I don't know if it's just me, but a bunch of your posts are showing up with no content. So it'll just be the grey bar that has your name and profile pic, then the coloured bar for whatever book you're posting about. Is this a beta thing or a me thing? 8y
shainareads @Heather_Reads I updated my phone to the latest Android OS and it broke my ability to post photos. :/ @Litsy says they're working on fixing it, but for now I'm posting w/o pics. 8y
Heather_Reads Oh that's annoying - so you're not posting any text either? I feel like I'm missing something whenever I see your posts 😔 8y
Heather_Reads Wait. Some of your posts have text and some don't, just in case you get worried. 8y
shainareads Oh no! Which don't have text?! 8y
Heather_Reads This post didn't - just the grey bar and the coloured one. No picture and no blurb. I've gone back through and basically none of your posts for this book have anything. You did a quote and I can't see a quote. And some reviews you've done have photos, but no review text. You're getting lots of comments from others though, so maybe it's just me? 8y
Heather_Reads I haven't done the new Apple update yet, so it could be related to that. But it's literally only your posts it's happening with so I don't know. Oh and @OutlandishLit's review of A Guide to Being Born - I can see a picture but no review text. 8y
jessicaesquire Yay! When you finish the first one you'll understand my hesitation. But the series is really fantastic. My favorites of her books and not just because I'm a blogger. 8y

I had such high hopes for this one - an alternate history in which the Civil War never happened and undercover free men hunt down runaway slaves sounded amazing. It wasn't a bad read, but just OK + seemingly clueless white author = 😕. (He did eventually give credit where it was due to his black literary influences, but not soon enough.) If you're on the fence, you can pass.
