The Golden State: A Novel | Lydia Kiesling

Lydia Kiesling sent me a box of books over Twitter recently when I was in between jobs. Now I have a job while a lot of people are in between jobs for a hazy amount of time. If this sounds like you, find my recent post on Twitter andrewtbarnes as I want to pay it forward for Lydia‘s birthday! Or buy it yourself if you need a good self quarantine read and are too late for this deal (as much as I‘d like to buy unlimited copies), stay safe everyone!

New Waves | Kevin Nguyen
post image
Pickpick

It's early in the year, but I would be surprised if Kevin Nguyen's New Waves is not one of my favorites of 2020. Really deftly navigates the importance of the digital self and our digital connections in this modern age with grace and humor aplenty. Nguyen's sophomore effort can't come soon enough...no pressure Kevin (and no rush I mean thanks for this relax/enjoy yourself)! Pick it up tomorrow if you‘re in need of a read.

Thanks Tin House Galley Club for the ARC, it was fun to sit in the strangler's seat with Lou. It is really hard to be good! It is sure hard to be decent even. The crushing weight of our unrealistic expectations is made heavier by our obligations (family, friends, work) & makes it hard to so much as mount the energy to put forth the energy to do more than exist (even after 5 Red Bulls..&this is before you throw trauma in the mix!). Check it out!

1st things 1st, my unpopular opinion! It‘s UNPOPULAR, potential Litsy scorn would be well earned! But it‘s “re-reading is bad as life is too short and you‘ll die before you get your TBR pile polished off and new worthwhile books come out every week!” I understand for many rereading is a comfort but not for me! #unpopularopiniongiveaway @shadowspeak17 this is very generous and I‘m excited for the discussion. @SamTwedt for bonus entry.

andytbarnes I‘ve never been concise so I ran out of room 🙃. There are a zillion books to possibly throw in here but thinking of some recent ones I have yet to make time for: Max Porter‘s Lanny, Helen Oyeyemi‘s Gingerbread, and Jia Talentino‘s Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion! 5y
TrishB I have only reread 4 books- I want to get to all the books do it‘s very rare for me. 5y

I know art is subjective and all of that but I am baffled by the low review scores on this one. Respectfully think Littens missed the mark on this. 31% pick what may go down as my favorite read of 2019, weird! A destabilizing read, Choi‘s crafted something bold. Something that expertly meditates on memory, autonomy, and the nature of fiction itself. Clearly not for everyone but for those after something unsettling, I found it supremely rewarding.

REPollock I get the idea that people like to hate on Susan Choi. I haven‘t read this one yet but I found the two books of hers I have read really thought-provoking and they both had a lot of haters. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 5y
suzisteffen Immediate stack add! Also, hmmmmmmm, why DO people hate on Susan Choi? 5y
PNWBookseller85 I loved it too! I think it‘s a really important book as well. The fluidity if the truth etc. Very timely. 5y
8little_paws This was my first Susan Choi. I got really sick of the teens in part 1, having just finished employment at a public arts school just like in the book, and I struggled to re-engage after that. 5y

I Like to Watch is a culmination of 20+ years of revelatory television writing from Emily Nussbaum. The essays elevate the shows I‘ve watched and love to greater heights. It makes me feel like an idiot for having missed others. Even when panning shows a love, I came away with a richer view of the show. Beautiful ruminations on why we watch and why television is enriching art and not the brain draining waste some dullards try and make it out to be.

Fascinating timing in finally getting around to this with the New Yorker article that came out today: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-dece.... It's hard for me to not have that blur my conceptions of the book. On it's merits, a gripping page turner but reading about how Dan Mallory is essentially a less murder-y IRL Tom Ripley is disorienting to say the least and will overshadow the book itself.

BookFreakOut Yeah, that article is craaaaazy! 5y

Deeply compelling and timely read that will make you have to think deeply about the privilege of movement and how borders came to be/what functions they serve. Some say “open borders” woah that‘s radical...but as humanitarian crises pile up, future generations may wonder how we waited so long.

Foundryside: A Novel | Robert Jackson Bennett
post image
Pickpick

As he demonstrated with his Divine Cities Trilogy, Bennett knows how to build fantasy worlds that you'll comfortably get lost in. His understanding and crafting of unique mythologies is exciting to bare witness to. With Foundryside he's crafted the type of novel that you devour and immediately want to dive into the next in the series. Sancia is the heroine 2018 desperately needed. I‘d be shocked if this was not my favorite fantasy read of the year

Impossible Owls: Essays | Brian Phillips
post image
Pickpick

I have been on a pretty big essay kick here lately. My verrrry part time job is near completely mindless which lends itself well to reading about more standout individuals and experiences. Phillips writes with real humor, humanity, verve, or insert whatever praise word you‘d like. My fav essays tackled things I thought I could care less about prior like sumo wrestling, seeing Wrath of the Titans alone in a theater loopy on pills, and the Iditarod.

@mrozzz awesome #cleartheshelvesgiveaway ! I went with Jeff Vandermeer‘s Southern Reach Trilogy. Loner | Teddy Wayne
post image
Pickpick

This was the first “loner” that came to mind (hence me posting it). However I should note David, the titular character, while certainly a memorable loner, is one that‘d set off alarm bells if claimed as a “favorite.” Loner mines some dark&disquieting corners of a particular brand of toxic masculinity. The meeker type that goes “I‘m a good guy, really!” But as the book goes deeper the reader knows better... #oneistheloneliest# @Elle_Skeldon

@Jas16 woah what a challenge to pick fav all time literary siblings! That may be too daunting for me so I stuck with the last book which I thought handled the sibling relationship (twins no less!) with grace and expert care as it tracks these twins‘ diverging paths as adulthood looms. Abbott‘s the type of writer that when I finished this book I cried a little/thought to myself “damn I‘m glad I coincidently find myself on this planet at the same time as her.” Few contemporary authors navigate the hormonal roller coaster of adolescence&subsequent relief yet bittersweet nostalgia that comes with that ending as deftly all while crafting a thriller which leaves you genuinely unable to devour fast enough to stifle your curiosity.

An incisive damnation of the racial inequalities that continue to haunt America and the near countless systemic consequences (broken criminal justice system, lack of mental health care) which kickstarted the #Blacklivesmatter movement. #pickpanbailsoso @Cinfhen such a cool end of year #giveaway 😎! My pick of the year is Jeff Vandermeer‘s Borne. I did not bail on any as I suffer through even book‘s I am not fully connecting with. My so-so selection is Kevin Wilson‘s Perfect Little World. I also didn‘t go so far as to pan a book this year as I try to stay with books I‘m fairly confident I‘ll enjoy (life‘s too short for subpar books) but Josh Barkan‘s Mexico was close to a pan.

McGuire is a startlingly empathetic writer. She writes young characters that in lesser hands would come off as cloying as they are whimsically charming and sincere.
