Stephen King and Philosophy
Stephen King and Philosophy | Jacob M. Held
10 posts | 2 read | 37 to read
Haunting us with such unforgettable stories as The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Salem s Lot, Carrie, The Green Mile, and Pet Semetary, Stephen King has been an anchor of American horror, science fiction, psychological thrillers, and suspense for over forty years. His characters have brought chills to our spines and challenged our notions of reality while leaving us in awe of the perseverance of the human spirit. As the first book in the new Great Authors and Philosophy series, Stephen King and Philosophy reveals some of the deeper issues raised by King s work. From retribution, freedom, and moral relativity, to death and insanity, the chapters of this book expose how King s stories access the questions and fears that nag each of us in the middle of night."

I've only been on Netgalley for around a month (I'm absolutely loving it!), and I just noticed that I got this new badge, where 3 or more publishers use your reviews I guess on the page advertising their book. Yay, me! I admit it, I'm thrilled 😊

LauraBrook Congrats! I'd be thrilled too! 9y
Chessa Congrats! I just got that one, too! It's a cool pat on the back. 😀 9y

Solid 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟! A must read for any fan of King's books. Some of it is pretty heavy reading but very illuminating. I recommend this highly. Thank you to Netgalley and Rowan & Littlefield for a copy in exchange for an honest review. To be published August 15, 2016.

jpmcwisemorgan I'm not a big King fan but your comments on the book have me intrigued. I may take a look at this one because King fan or not it sounds as if it would enlightening. 10y
KrisConstantReader @jpmcwisemorgan it is; I hope you like it! It seems to be getting pretty good reviews from others on Goodreads. 10y
KrisConstantReader @jpmcwisemorgan in my longer review I listed all the chapters, if you click on the link above you can check it out and see if it's something you might like. 10y
jpmcwisemorgan @KrisConstantReader Cool, thanks for letting me know. I like to read about the meaning of something - art, music, etc. Or debates about what something is, and so on. I have read some King so I'm going to put it at the bottom of the pile for now. 10y

"The primary duty of literature [is]...to tell us the truth about ourselves by telling us lies about people who never existed." This is why I adore Stephen King ❤️

jeff Love this! 10y
Keegz63 "Danse Macabre" is on the top shelf of my bookcase on writing and reading. The best of the best. 10y
KrisConstantReader @Keegz63 yes! I haven't read it in a long time, time for a re-read. Have you read On Writing? 10y
Keegz63 @KrisConstantReader More times than I like to admit. It's one of my go-to's when I'm cranky about my writing. Which is often. 😁 10y
KrisConstantReader @Keegz63 it's such a great book--one of my all-time favorites. 10y

I like this but some of the essays came off really pretentious and I struggled through a few of the essays. This is meant for those well versed in King. I say that because if you haven't read the books being discussed then you will receive spoilers galore.

I've been enjoying this book so far, but this chapter is FANTASTIC! Any of you who appreciate Stephen King and his work (and would possibly like to delve into deeper meanings of it)--I highly recommend this book. To be released August 15, 2016

ej0728 I cannot wait! Been a King fan since I was a kid. 10y
KrisConstantReader @ej0728 me, too--since I was in jr high! I think you'll like this book. 10y
ej0728 @KrisConstantReader I've been reacquainting myself with his short stories and had forgotten how terrific and terrifying Nightshift is. Still gives me the willies! 10y

KrisConstantReader @ej0728 oh yeah, that's one of his best. I love his short story collections. This is another great one 10y
Bkwurm Intriguing! Putting this one on my list. 📚 10y
ej0728 @KrisConstantReader Yep, that's a great one. Just read Bazaar of Bad Dreams and was pretty satisfied. Also really liked 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader I just finished this essay! This book is so interesting. It's looking at his books in ways I never imagined! And so many about Roland. 10y
KrisConstantReader @TheNextBook yes--I'm a huge King fan and the only thing by him I haven't read is The Dark Tower series, it just never appealed to me. But people rave about it so much, I think it's time for me to finally start reading it. I'm really loving this book, it's great. 10y
KrisConstantReader @ej0728 yes, I love those. Nobody writes like the King. 10y
KrisConstantReader @Bkwurm I don't think you'll be disappointed! I'm only around 40% into it but I really like it. 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader I'm re-reading that series in December. The Gunslinger is the most difficult one to get through but also the shortest. Read the first two, if you don't like them both then walk away! It is an extremely interesting journey with amazing storytelling. But not for all 10y
KrisConstantReader @TheNextBook I'll try that. It reminds me of something King once said in an interview--that he writes 2 kinds of books: "innies" and "outies" , innies being more character driven and outies more out there. And that a fan of his would tend to like one type but not both. I think he nailed it. 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader I'll check that article out! 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader I'm both! I like both styles. I can't choose especially with the books he stated because I really liked all of those! 10y
KrisConstantReader @TheNextBook hahahahaha, I love it! 10y

I just started this one and I'm loving it already.

Josie It's so good! I still can't decide whether this or End of Watch is my favorite in the trilogy. 10y
KrisConstantReader @Josie I haven't read the others since they were first released, I think I want to go back and read the whole trilogy again. 10y
KrisConstantReader @Josie but this is a different book, dealing with Stephen King's works and how they relate to philosophy. Great so far. 10y

Josie @KrisConstantReader hahahahaha it is! I don't know why I didn't see that. I got overly excited :) 10y
KrisConstantReader Lol. No worries, anything King related gets me excited. 10y
Little_Reader @KrisConstantReader How have I never heard of this book? When did it come out? It sounds awesome! 10y
KrisConstantReader @Little_Reader It comes out August 15. I just joined Netgalley a few days ago and got this one right away; I was surprised. 10y

Little_Reader I'll definitely have to read this! Sounds like a good read! Thanks for the info! @KrisConstantReader 10y
KrisConstantReader @Little_Reader you're very welcome! I'm around 25% through it and I really like it so far. 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader I just started reading this and read that line and yep, kind of pissed me off a little bit. 10y
KrisConstantReader @TheNextBook yeah, he is my all-time favorite writer, hands down. I think many who think negatively of him have probably not even read him. 10y
TheNextBook @KrisConstantReader completely agree! Completely agree! 10y

Dear lord, why didn't I try Netgalley sooner? I just signed up yesterday and this is my second approval. Stephen King is my all-time favorite writer; I'm excited to read this.

AnnaDesourdy Just started The Shining today! 10y
KrisConstantReader @AnnaDesourdyAuthor ooh, that's a good one. Enjoy! 10y
QueenAnne @AnnaDesourdyAuthor Oh I loved that one! Great suspence! And after that (if you haven't already) you should read "Dr Sleep" with little Danny Torrance all grown up! (I even named my fish after them "Abby (Abra) and Uncle Dan" ❤️ 10y

AnnaDesourdy @QueenAnne oooooh I'll have to add that to my TBR – my next Stephen King will be Mr. Mercedes! Heard great things about the trilogy! 10y
KrisConstantReader @AnnaDesourdyAuthor yes, the trilogy is excellent. I've read everything by King except for The Dark Tower series ( which people rave about), one of these days I'll get to it. If you enjoy short stories, King's collections are to die for, just brilliant. This is a great one 10y
QueenAnne @AnnaDesourdyAuthor I love it! Just recently started on the last one "End of watch" and already feeling sad this is the last one ? but so gooood ? had a massive book hangover after Dr Sleep 10y
AnnaDesourdy @QueenAnne oh book hangovers are the worst! I am still recovering right now from 10y
QuoteQueen I LOVE the pop culture & philosophy series. I will have to keep an eye out for the great authors & philosophy ones now too! 😊 10y
