I remember encountering a jaw-dropping photo of a flounder who had been placed on a chequerboard in his tank. Within minutes the flat fish had produced a fine rendition of a chequerboard across his back. From a distance, the flounder effectively disappears.
A so-so read. I really enjoyed the science on fish cognition. I work to restore fisheries, am a fisherman and work with commercial and sport fishers to remove dams and restore rivers. I have a different take on the ethics and role of fishing than the author, although I respect the views of others who don‘t eat fish. However, a lot of rivers and fisheries would be lost to development without the hard work by anglers to protect them.
Next up for tonight. I work on salmon/steelhead restoration. I do fish. Will be an interesting read. I‘m slightly irritated by the intro....
What a Fish Knows by Jonathan Balcombe. Enter the unique and social world of fish and why exactly they live just as complex social lives as we do. Very interesting read.

Loved, loved, loved this book! Greatly informative, but also humorous and, at times, moving. Do you eat/have/watch/catch/know fish? 🐟 If yes, you need to read this book.
So far, so good 😊
This one is perfect for anyone who loved The Soul of an Octopus, but craved a bit more science. What a Fish Knows is well organized, well written, and engaging. Balcombe really knows how to balance fact with anecdote. A must read for anyone who loves fish/aquatic creatures.
