John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy | Robert Dallek
Robert Dallek's masterful John F. Kennedy: An Unfinished Life was a number one national bestseller, and it remains the most widely read one-volume biography of the 35th President. Now, in this marvelous short biography of John F. Kennedy, Dallek achieves a miracle of compression, capturing in a small space the essence of his renowned full-length masterpiece. Here readers will find the fascinating insights and groundbreaking revelations found in An Unfinished Life. The heart of the book focuses on Kennedy's political career, especially the presidency. The book sheds light on key foreign affairs issues such as the Bay of Pigs debacle, Khrushchev's misguided bullying of Kennedy in Vienna, the Cuban Missile crisis, the nuclear test ban, the race for space, and the initial dealings with Southeast Asia, especially Laos. It also highlights the difficulties Kennedy faced getting a domestic agenda passed, from a tax cut to spur the economy, to federal aid to education, Medicare, and civil rights. Dallek reveals the thinking behind Robert Kennedy's appointment as Attorney General and convincingly argues that Kennedy would never have expanded the war in Vietnam the way that Lyndon Johnson did. The book also addresses questions about Kennedy's assassination and concludes with his presidential legacy and why he remains so popular despite serving only a thousand days in office. Based upon the definitive biography, John F. Kennedy offers readers a concise, authoritative, and highly readable life of one of our best-loved presidents. Acclaim for John F. Kennedy: An Unfinished Life: "One of the most engrossing biographies I have ever read.... Nothing less than a masterpiece." --David Herbert Donald, author of Lincoln "It's hard to believe that someone could find anything new to say about John F. Kennedy, but Dallek succeeds in this riveting and well-documented biography." --The New Yorker "An intimate portrait indeed...unexpected and important.... This is nothing if not a profile in courage." --New York Times Book Review

Is your library next? Is this what you voted for?

Librarybelle So horrible 2w

Bookwormjillk This is awful (but I think I read they opened again this morning, so that's good I guess.) 2w

DogMomIrene Watched a Boston news segment on YouTube about how it reopened this morning. Said 5 visitor-facing probationary employees were laid off, though, and that sounds permanent. Just awful. 2w
dabbe I am moved to say this word that's so hard to say: NO. No, I didn't vote for this. And I stand with my head held high as I now do this: 😡😤🤬 2w

AmyG I am beyond happy to hear it reopened! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I hate how much chaos they are causing. It appears the library is reopened, but I cannot find if they brought back enough staff to keep it open? I am not at all surprised unfortunately, this administration hates history and truth. 2w
bookishbitch I am so over this administration already. 2w
AnnCrystal Glad that it reopened.

Scary times 😢 I didn't vote for this either 📚🇺🇲🦅🇺🇸📚.

Books & artist will always be considered a threat. We should gather and do a protest by going outside, finding a safe, legal place to sit, and read from dawn to dusk for a day. If anything, it will drive the suppressors crazy. Writers should come with typewrites or journals and artist with canvases.

Just to be clear, I am not officially suggesting this 😜📚💝.

BarbaraBB Are libraries being shut down in the US? Because of money or because of that horrible man? 2w
Lindy Amy, I feel odd acknowledging your post with a heart. I want the option of a broken heart instead. 😔 2w
AmyG Oh @Lindy 😞 2w
forestandcrow My library is trying to change my kids library card to where she cannot check out books they deem "inappropriate" for her age. They are trying to also not let us use our cards at other libraries not in our network. They are moving books that the religious zealouts here deem "pornographic" or "inappropriate" for kids without reading them. Our library is aleeady small enough. It is awful. I have emailed so manytimes about it all. 2w
Susanita Hateful people doing hateful things. 2w
AmyG @forestandcrow That‘s horrible. I am now trying to make a library of books for my grandson-history, science, banned books…from used book sales. This world. 😞🤬 2w

AshleyHoss820 And people made fun of me for amassing a large in-home library. I knew what was coming. This is all so exhausting. (edited) 2w
CoverToCoverGirl This all so sad and overwhelming.. 2w
ncsufoxes We are going to try & go to the Smithsonian‘s National African American Museum of History & Culture this weekend. Since I fear they will be spiteful & shut it down. 2w
AmyG @AshleyHoss820 I‘m with you on this. 👊🏻 @ncsufoxes That you even had to type that breaks my heart. @CoverToCoverGirl It is. 😢 (edited) 2w
ncsufoxes @AmyG same, it makes me sad & angry that this is something I have to even think about 2w

I found this to be a very good read. Especially if you're not fully aware of this man...or his presidency. It's a #chunkster so be prepared to settle in for a few days read. Truly a very good and interesting book. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Working my way through the presidential bios. This one was good. I was a little bummed that the only audio version was abridged (although not THAT bummed since it came after really long books about Truman and Eisenhower). Still learned a lot, especially about Kennedy‘s foreign policy experiences.

Roary47 I‘m encouraged to read through the bios now. What a great way to learn more about history. 2y
fredthemoose @Roary47 Give it a shot! At least for a time period you‘re interested in. I started a few years ago and it has really shored up a lot of my understanding of American history. A lot of the biographies are long, but many are also quite good. (edited) 2y

My plan is to read at least a chapter a day in an effort to start working more non-fiction off my TBR pile.

Kaye I will be interested in seeing your reviews since I like nonfiction. Sorry if this posts twice. My first comment isn‘t showing up. 🤨 7y
