We‘re all familiar with what happened during the Holocaust, but what about what happened to the survivors in the first few years after the war ended? This novel, based on actual events, tells the stories of a group of survivors who were imprisoned in a British detention camp in Palestine shortly after the war. Friendships are formed, families are made, people live and die, and the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is born.

A fictionalization of the October 1945 rescue of 200+ Jewish prisoners, all WWII survivors, from the Atlit internment camp, a prison for “illegal immigrants.” Told through the eyes of 4 young women: Shayndel, a Polish Zionist; Leonie, a Parisian beauty; Tedi, a hidden Dutch Jew; and Zorah, a concentration camp survivor. Seemed fitting, tonight begins Israel‘s National Holocaust Remembrance Day. I visited Atlit earlier this year 😮😥😡#NeverForget

Cinfhen It was a story/place I was completely unaware of before I visited this year @TrishB @Wanderingwithwords it was so sad...I couldn‘t imagine surviving the war\ Holocaust only to arrive in Palestine as a Jewish immigrant and then be placed once again behind barbwire 😥😥😥 6y
Soubhiville I thought this book was excellent. 6y
Cinfhen Seeing the camp in person was pretty amazing @Soubhiville really eerie 6y
Mdargusch It‘s wonderful that there is this day of remembrance. 6y
Cinfhen It is @Mdargusch there are fewer and fewer survivors left to tell their stories 😢I‘m going to hear a man speak tonight who was hidden by Dutch family during the war 6y
emilyhaldi Wow I didn‘t know about this place. Stacking this book 💙 6y
Mdargusch Wow! I would love to hear him speak. 6y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen The high school where I taught has an annual Holocaust Symposium. Survivors tell their stories to the students. This year there were eleven speakers. In the past, there had been twenty five. It is the last generation to hear and ask questions of these men and women. Very moving experience. How fortunate that you are able to hear a survivor speak tonight. 💗 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve only read her book The Red Tent but I‘ve always wondered about her other books. 6y
Cinfhen I can‘t believe I never knew you taught HS @DivineDiana I agree; it‘s a privilege to hear the last of the survivors...as long as they are alive I will promise my best to listen and then share with others. 6y
Cinfhen I think Red Tent is still her best @Reviewsbylola I didn‘t care for 6y

After suffering through some mediocre books,it was wonderful to find a wonderful historical novel based closely on actual events. Diamanté put me right in the middle of a detention camp for Jews in Palestine right after the end World War II. We learn about the horrific past experiences and current struggles of four women as they try to live their lives again after losing everyone they loved.
Great story with memorable characters.

Historical fiction at its best. I love when books are about true events and true places with fictional characters who bring these places alive once again.
