Kwaidan - Stories and Studies of Strange Things
Kwaidan - Stories and Studies of Strange Things | Lafcadio Hearn
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Finished this quirky little book today! I was utterly charmed by its odd little ghost/supernatural stories, and its meanderings on butterflies, mosquitoes, and a particularly dense bit on ants as ethically superior creatures to close the book out. These Japanese ghost stories aren't scary, but can be creepy or funny. This public domain book (1904) is a gem. Recommend for #Scarathlon folks as a quick, odd read! Book 2/4 for #BFCr4. #SerialReader

Reading some more of these stories before bed. Loving this collection of Japanese ghost stories!! ❤️ #SerialReader

I'm not currently in the zone of PG&E power shut offs in the Bay Area, but I'm very close to it, so if the wind changes my power will be shut off. (Our electric company is shutting off power in much of the area due to high fire risk, and it could take up to 6 days for power to be restored.) Crossing my fingers.🤞

nelehelen Ahh hope you don‘t get affected! I‘m in the city but my work is in the red zone... soooo I‘m not sure if I‘m supposed to go to work tomorrow. Guess we‘ll just seee! 5y
Caterina @nelehelen Thanks!! Oh that's stressful, I hope you find out quickly and easily tomorrow whether you need to go in! 5y

All y'all #Scarathlon folks have me inspired! As a break from school readings tonight I read the first issue of Kwaidan, a collection of Japanese ghost stories. Loved the first story in the collection! And so glad that #SerialReader had a non-Western option in the "horror" category! @SerialReader

LauraJ Very cool! 5y

Know it's a little late for Halloween, but there's plenty of autumnal vibes to these stories that make them still worth checking out.

Added recently to #SerialReader - Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, a collection of Japanese ghost stories. They range from creepy to funny to sad, some quite short and others complex. A fascinating read! 👻 https://www.serialreader.org/5b1bd668572ec72ac6818fb6/kwaidan/

In Japanese Kwai or kawai (Ka-why) means scary or terrifying but kawaii (Ka-why-we) means cute, appealing, desired!

Japanese stories are different and this is a perfect collection of strange Japanese folk stories. To the American reader they will end abruptly making you raise an eyebrow but this is quintessential Japanese! I read the whole collection in a few hours.

Stephanie-Anne I love Japanese literature, and stories set in Japan 😻 8y

HBD to folklorist/author Lafcadio Hearn, born 1850! Both Kwaidan and the movie based on it are spooky, haunting fun - great for kids and parties (well, the stories at least...the movie is a little adult). Definitely worth checking out! I highly recommend "Hoshi the Earless!"
