Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me
Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me: Depression in the First Person | Anna Mehler Paperny
15 posts | 12 read | 14 to read
In her early 20s, Anna Mehler Papernyhaving just landed her dream job as an investigative journalist, and with a loving family and a strong social networknevertheless found herself spiraling into despair. A suicide attempt landed her in the intensive care unit, after her bosses found her passed out in her apartment having ingested a deadly mix of sleeping pills and antifreeze. Many more suicide attempts followed in subsequent years. Following the dictum know thine enemy, Anna set out to meet and interview those on the frontline of treatments. While also trying to be a good patient, Anna turned her investigative journalists eye on the world around herin the psych ward; as an outpatient; as a survivor, enduring the grueling ordeal of facing concerned family, friends, and coworkers; finding the right meds and therapist; and staying insured and employed. In search of answers, she interviewed leading medical expertsfrom psychiatrists to neurologists, brain-mapping pioneers to family practitionersand others dabbling in strange hypotheses. Cured or not, she discovered the truth of her condition in online depression-testing and the far frontiers of brain mappingas well as the disturbing truth about how primitive our methods remain for healing sick brains. With courageous honesty and uncommon eloquence, Papernys stunning memoir chronicles her firsthand experience of depression and her intrepid quest to explore what we know (and dont know) about the disease, while providing an invaluable guide to a health-care system strugglingand too often failingto provide solutions. As fascinating as it is heartrending, as humorous as it is serious, it is a must-read for anyone touched by depression.

Hello, so, I have MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) and I am wondering if anyone knows any books on depression or that have characters with depression…. (I‘m hoping to find something to relate to) I‘ve read the tagged book already, but that‘s it. Any ideas would be much appreciated, thank you.

jlhammar Not exactly MDD, but this one deals with mental health struggles and I loved it. Relatable and funny. 1y
jlhammar This one was also a fantastic read. 1y
Soubhiville I‘m not sure about MMD either but all 3 of Jenny Lawson‘s books are humorous memoirs which dive heavily into her struggles with depression. I adore her. First one is 1y

Soubhiville Currently reading this memoir in which the author deals with depression 1y
marleed Ohh, I‘m sorry and hope the recommendations help. I was just about to recommend Jenny Lawson books when I saw @Soubhiville already gave her a shout out. 1y
Insightsintobooks @jlhammar thanks for the recommendations, I‘ll look into them. @Soubhiville Thank you, I‘ll look into those as well! @marleed thanks, I hope they help too. 1y
Insightsintobooks @Ruthiella it was a good memoir! 1y
squirrelbrain I concur with @jlhammar about Sorrow and Bliss and Everyone, although I much preferred the first one. 1y
Sleepswithbooks I have this one in my TBR list to read. If you‘ve read any of her books you know she has depression and writes everything from a place of truth and humor. 1y
BookDragonNotWorm I'd recommend Jenny Lawson's books. She puts a humorous spin on her illness, making hers the only books on the subject I've ever read that haven't made me more feel depressed. 1y
CarolynM This one is an M/M romance, so it may not be your cup of tea, but the MC narrator has Depression disorder and it is a plot point in the story 1y
Insightsintobooks @CarolynM I‘m not much into romance, but thank you. 1y
CarolynM This one is an oldie but a goodie about a man with bipolar disorder 1y

I really enjoyed this one. It was very well-read. Brought to light a lot of the issues depressed individuals have to navigate through mental health care in developed countries (story based out of Canada). It's really sad how $, stigmas, and misunderstandings stand in the way of people who need mental health care.

Started this one as my next #AudioCommute book. Thank you so much @DieAReader I am loving it so far!

DieAReader Awesome! I‘m glad you‘re liking it🥰♥️ 2y
ElizaMarie @DieAReader I mean its super sad really to know how much she is struggling and brushes on the state of mental health in well-developed countries... Also hit so close to home with my job... but .... despite all that I am really enjoying it as I feel it's very necessary to hear. 2y
DieAReader @ElizaMarie I found it super relatable at times too, which also made a big difference. 2y

Such a good book on depression. I love the journalism aspect of the book. Paperny explored so many things including how difficult it is for the non rich, and even the non white to get good help for their depression. There is a lot of insight to be gained by reading this book.
Suffering from depression myself I can say that this book made me feel seen. I hope that we can learn more about depression and how to treat it.

So let's fix this, goddamn it, and move on to bitching about something else.

And if you don't want mental wellness to remain the purview of the privileged, if you don't want poverty to doom people to debilitating anguish, you need to cover pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy like you mean it. Universally. For everyone.

Such a great depiction of what depression feels like.

Society has created a damaging gender dichotomy that exists outside of humans' actual proclivity for dead-end despair.

A great unflinching look at the mental health system in Canada. It's focus is on depression treatment through the lense of an investigative journalist's personal experiences.

A memoir about suicide & depression I knew I had to read as soon as I saw it. I listened to it thanks to my library but I know I will buy a print copy soon bc there is just so much great info in here. It even helped me with my own issues with anxiety & depression. I highly recommend this read bc there are so many facts in here!

Part memoir, part journalistic investigation into the issue of depression, which “remains undertreated and poorly treated and grossly inequitably treated, in part because of our own squeamishness in confronting it, or our denial of its existence as an illness, and the destruction it wreaks when left to its own devices.” Difficult to read because too many people I love have died by suicide, and I expect others will find it hard also. #audiobook

The tagged audiobook was in my ears during my day of travel yesterday, when I spotted these toys in the Toronto airport.
