Resistance: A Songwriter's Story of Hope, Change, and Courage (Not for Online)
Resistance: A Songwriter's Story of Hope, Change, and Courage (Not for Online) | Tori Amos
A timely and passionate call to action for engaging with our current political moment, from the Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer-songwriter and New York Times bestselling author Tori Amos. Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry's most enduring and ingenious artists. From her unnerving depiction of sexual assault in "Me and a Gun" to her post-September 11 album, Scarlet's Walk, to her latest album, Native Invader, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political. Amos began playing piano as a teenager for the politically powerful at hotel bars in Washington, DC, during the formative years of the post-Goldwater and then Koch-led Libertarian and Reaganite movements. The story continues to her time as a hungry artist in Los Angeles to the subsequent three decades of her formidable music career. Amos explains how she managed to create meaningful, politically resonant work against patriarchal power structures--and how her proud declarations of feminism and her fight for the marginalized always proved to be her guiding light. She teaches us to engage with intention in this tumultuous global climate and speaks directly to supporters of #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as young people fighting for their rights and visibility in the world. Filled with compassionate guidance and actionable advice--and using some of the most powerful, political songs in Amos's canon--this book is for anyone determined to steer the world back in the right direction.

#ReadAway2024

Added to my #Roll100 list & it came up #24 in June. I started the audiobook 4 years ago but kept falling asleep listening to it. I cracked the code! I need Tori‘s soothing narration at 1.5x-it draws my attention more & keeps me awake without seeming sped up!😆This memoir is a good mix of her story & music career with her activism & political commentary, blended with snippets of her lyrics. If you like her music you should enjoy it.

CBee I tried listening to this in the car - bad idea. Might try speeding it up to see if that helps! I love Tori ♥️♥️ 5mo

In Resistance, Amos expresses the importance of activism, using her own experience for examples and including a bit of memoir in the process. She does get a little woo-woo in places for me, but overall this is quite good. And there‘s a bit at the end that I think would be useful for any artist who is struggling and wondering whether or not to move forward with their art. Plus, she recites some of her lyrics so emotionally it‘s really affecting.

Karisa 😍 Tori Amos (and Nirvana) were the soundtrack to my senior year of high school. I‘ll always have a special place in my heart for her lyrics! 3y
Hooked_on_books @Karisa She has really never pulled any punches with her lyrics, which I think is outstanding. I have no doubt she‘s helped a lot of people to feel seen and not alone. 3y
Christine I love her and can‘t believe I haven‘t gotten to this one yet! Thanks for the reminder. 3y

BarbaraBB I am still listening to Little Earthquakes 🤍 3y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB She mentions here that when she initially submitted that album to her label, they rejected it. Can you believe it almost didn‘t exist? That would‘ve been terrible, since it‘s fantastic and has clearly stood the test of time! 3y
BarbaraBB Wow, what if. It is still great indeed. 3y

Started another audio book. I wish she sang her song lyrics instead of just reading them. I think I understand the artistic choice, but it's bugging me. Otherwise, I'm enjoying her insights.

Amos is talking about the Iran Hostage Crisis and I had to reread this sentence. I was a child when this happened and there was an intense murder case in local news. I honestly don‘t remember the crisis as it was happening, only learning about it when I was a teen. However, I cannot conceive of a USA “allergic to military intervention” or one that did not rally around the U.S. flag. Both phenomena I find intriguing in a culture shock kind of way.

tpixie Yes the Vietnam war created many anti military and anti USA. Think of Hanoi Jane. We haven‘t fully recovered. The poor veterans were so mistreated when they came back. 5y
WanderingBookaneer I see what you mean, @tpixie , but we are talking about (maybe) a five year window. After that it feels as if military conflicts have come back with a vengeance. 5y
tpixie @WanderingBookaneer yes unfortunately we have spent a lot of time in the Middle East. Luckily we‘ve been backing out the last few years. I hopefully, I think, we are again more appreciative of our military!! ♥️ 5y

I appreciated Tori Amos's book about her creative process and how she approaches her work with intent recognizing the power of words and music to fight against the patriarchal power structures of today's world. She has created a number of amazing and powerful songs and courageously takes on political issues in her work to speak up and fight for those who are marginalized.
