The Other Side of the Coin
The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe | Angela Kelly
11 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
THE OFFICIAL BOOK, FULLY ENDORSED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH II From Her Majestys trusted confidant and Dresser Angela Kelly LVO comes a lavishly designed book of never-before-seen photos of The Queen, Her wardrobe and Her jewels and features intimate anecdotes from Angelas 25-year career working closely with Her Majesty. A truly unique keepsake and collectors item to be treasured. For the nearly seven decades of her reign, Her Majesty The Queen has used clothing to create a powerful visual identity that transcends fashion and has made her perhaps the most readily identifiable person on the planet. Angela Kelly, building on the work of the great designers and milliners who have worked with Her Majesty through the years including couturiers Sir Norman Hartnell, Sir Hardy Amies, and Ian Thomas, and milliners such as Simone Mirman and Freddy Fox brings her own imagination to bear on an iconic uniform that suggests continuity and tradition, and ensures that the wearer is always the most visible person in a room or a crowd.Anna Wintour, Vogue When Angela Kelly and The Queen are together, laughter echoes through the corridors of Buckingham Palace. Angela has worked with The Queen and walked the corridors of the Royal Household for twenty-five years, initially as Her Majestys Senior Dresser and then latterly as Her Majestys Personal Advisor, Curator, Wardrobe and In-house Designer. As the first person in history to hold this title, she shares a uniquely close working relationship with The Queen. In The Other Side of the Coin, The Queen has personally given Angela her blessing to share their extraordinary bond with the world. Whether its preparing for a formal occasion or brightening Her Majestys day with a playful joke, Angelas priority is to serve and support. Sharing never-before-seen photographs many from Angelas own private collection and charming anecdotes of their time spent together, this revealing book provides memorable insights into what its like to work closely with The Queen, to curate her wardrobe and to discover a true and lasting connection along the way. The book documents the unique working relationship between Her Majesty The Queen and the woman who has been her Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser for more than two decades: Angela Kelly. It gives a rare insight into the demands of the job of supporting the Monarch, and we gain privileged insight into a successful working relationship, characterized by humor, creativity, hard work, and a mutual commitment to service and duty. Angela is a talented and inspiring woman, who has captured the highlights of her long career with The Queen for us all to share. Samantha Cohen, Assistant Private Secretary to The Queen (20112018)

⭐️⭐️ I can get down with Royal and Royal-adjacent books. I understand the Queen‘s life was different from anyone else‘s, but a photo shoot with rain clouds above is not actual suspense I care about. It was interesting hearing about some of the clothes but this was just so silly.

jb72 Have you read the Tolle book? How is it? 4y
Eggs @jb72 I listened to audio read by Tolle. Use the phys book for reference. It‘s a solid recommend-challenges your mind and soul 4y
jb72 @Eggs Thanks. That‘s good to know. I‘ve been toying with the idea of reading it. 4y

Impressive - the color-coded umbrellas (all transparent so she can be seen in the rain) have their own wardrobe!
@Come-read-with-me ❤️

inthegreensandblues I love her colorful wardrobe! 4y
Come-read-with-me @Eggs Thank you for sharing this!!! I‘ve seen one of those umbrellas!!! She truly is a woman of singular charm and style!! Have you heard about the lengths she goes to to make guests feel welcome at Buckingham palace? During one dinner a dignitary picked up a finger bowl and drank from it. The queen being the queen picked hers up and did the same thing. She is spectacular! ❤️ (edited) 4y
Eggs @Come-read-with-me My fave story is the time when things were tense between Ghana and Britain when she & Philip were there; so Q approached leader Kwame Nkrumah to dance. This was huge as it was mid 1960s with race disharmony and white women didn‘t dance with black men. She got Kwame to smile and laugh ⬇️ (edited) 4y
Eggs Then Philip danced with Kwame‘s wife, the press snapped a photo and voila! Yes they are amazing, polite, and witty. Love the water bowl story 💗. BTW mail coming to you this week🤗 @Come-read-with-me 4y
Come-read-with-me @Eggs What a lovely thing of both of them to do! I really do love the Queen - she is just elegant. My next Queen story involves my music teacher. He was from Britain and once sang for Queen Elizabeth and her Mother (who was also just charming.) He said that both were simply gracious. Mail!!!! That is so exciting ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you 😘 4y

My pick for #CrownontheCover has to include the Queen. This book is by her official dresser. #MagnificentMarch

OriginalCyn620 I‘m glad you included the Funkos! 4y

I wasn‘t expecting too much from this, but I think my expectations were still too high. The photos are lovely. It‘s interesting to see the fabrics and details up close. But there aren‘t enough of them. The writing is painful and repetitive. Boring even. I didn‘t expect the author to spill any secrets, as she still works for the queen, but I also didn‘t expect her to be so massively egotistical. Ugh.

Pickpick

This was good. I would have liked more about the clothes or personal stories and less bragging. The pictures and history were wonderful.

Hoooooo boy. Now I wasn‘t expecting scandal or gossip because Angela Kelly still works for The Queen, but this is repetitive, badly written and just dull. If I hadn‘t known it was published by a big house I would have had it down as a self published vanity project.

rockpools Yowch! With the ‘fully endorsed‘ and everything, I‘d have expected much more! 4y
Verity @RachelO I suspect fully endorsed may mean that HMtQ doesn‘t think she has anything to worry about! It was the repetitive writing style and small vocabulary that got me more than anything though. There are interesting ideas buried here (how they retrim and restyle outfits for example) but you never really get into them because it‘s written like a middle schooler trying to hit word count. 4y
rockpools @Verity sounds incredibly grim! How is it on photos - were they expecting anyone to actually read the text??! 4y
Verity @RachelO not enough of them to make up for it (and often separated from their captions in the ebook edition I read) and not many of them unseen ones of the queen - let alone candid ones. So glad I didn‘t get this for my mum for Christmas. I got her Lady Glenconner instead which she finished yesterday and pronounced “astonishing” 4y
rubyslippersreads Disappointed—I was looking forward to this. But happy to hear the good news about A Lady in Waiting. 4y

Got a 2 hr break from work (playing with the schedule for my doc‘s kiddo‘s school play), so I‘m hanging out reading this😊 I‘m really enjoying it, so far! (Side note: It‘s possible that my Royal obsession has become unhealthy....)

LeahBergen This is on my Christmas wish list . 😆 (edited) 4y
NovelGirl82 @LeahBergen The Quest for Queen Mary & Mary Queen of Scots are both on mine! I‘m also anxiously awaiting Lady in Waiting by Anne Glenconner! (edited) 4y
LeahBergen The Quest for Queen Mary is SO GOOD. And I just recently received Lady in Waiting in the mail. 😆😆 I obviously have a problem, too. (edited) 4y

LeahBergen No, I ordered it from Book Depository. See? A problem! 😆 4y
NovelGirl82 @LeahBergen They have it? I‘m going to have to look! I‘ve had it on my Amazon list waiting on the 2020 release date they have listed to get here! I just assumed I couldn‘t get it until then from anywhere. I‘m glad you have the same problem so that I can get info 😂😂😂 4y
