This is a thriller trying to do too much with too little editing. It had a distracting lack of consistency (did Zara have a tinge or a heavy French accent? did the Vatican know about the eruption of a new island or did it not?). It often felt like the author juggled chapters & forgot to adjust the timing. Dialog early in the book was cringeworthy but improved. And it could be very confusing. Why a thumbs up? He‘s a good writer in need of a good ⬇️

Let‘s see how many new African countries the author can fit into this book because now we are in the #CentralAfricanRepublic #CAR (I just learned Bangui is its capitol). I do feel like this author has tried to cram every thriller trope into this novel (even the Vatican), and pretty much covered nearly as many Saharan and near Saharan countries (plus a few European countries to boot).

We started in #Libya, spent a few chapters in #Malta, and now we‘ve arrived in #Niger. Just ticking off these countries for #readingAfrica2022. But in all honesty they‘re just traveling through the Sahara Desert, where one place is like the other. I‘m still counting them though, in case I don‘t find any other books to cover those countries.

Ok I‘m now guessing this is self-published with no editor. Almost all the dialog is awkward (see previous post) and now we‘ve got a consistency problem. Either she has a tinge of a French accent, or a heavy French accent. Pick one.

Sad really because it is an interesting book and his landscape and action descriptions are good.

The dialog in this book can be cringeworthy. The bad guy here is monologuing. I doubt bad guys would knowingly admit to being a “man without morals.” I wish authors would just let actions speak for themselves. He‘s holding a knife to a woman‘s throat threatening to kill her. Of course he‘s evil. The story itself is interesting and descriptions are well done. But dialog and attempts to explain timelines are awkward. #Libya #readingAfrica2022

The prologue was very good and now I know at least one country in which the book is set, #Libya! Yay! I don‘t have that country yet for #readingafrica2022

In the next episode in my struggles with ebooks drama, I‘ve decided to try this ebook rather than starting my April #foodandlit book early. (I always have to have an ebook going.) This is a thriller set in the Sahara Desert. I love thrillers, and it‘ll work for #readingafrica2022 although it‘s silent as to what country or countries it‘s set in. Oh well, it‘s still in Africa! The only problem is that it‘s a mini-chunkster. But I‘ll try it anyway.
