Me and White Supremacy
Me and White Supremacy: How to Recognise Your Privilege, Combat Racism and Change the World | Layla Saad
6 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
'Layla Saad's ME AND WHITE SUPREMACY is an indispensable resource for white people who want to challenge white supremacy but don't know where to begin' Robin DiAngelo, author of New York Times bestseller WHITE FRAGILITY 'Confrontational and much-needed' Stylist White supremacy is a violent system of oppression that harms Black, Indigenous and People of Colour and if you are a person who holds white privilege, then you are complicit in upholding that harm, whether you realise it or not. And if you are person who holds white privilege, the question you should be asking isn't whether or not this is true, but rather, what are you going to do about it? Between June and July 2018, Layla Saad ran a 28-day Instagram challenge under the hashtag #MeAndWhiteSupremacy, for people with white privilege to unflinchingly examine the ways that they are complicit in upholding the oppressive system of white supremacy. The challenge quickly went viral, with thousands of people from all over the world (including USA, Canada, UK, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Russia, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Qatar, among others) diving deep for 28 consecutive days to examine and take responsibility for the ways in which they uphold white supremacy. The challenge catalyzed a worldwide awakening for thousands of white-privileged people to begin to take ownership of their personal anti-racism work. The updated and expanded Me and White Supremacy takes the work deeper by adding more historical and cultural contexts, sharing moving stories and anecdotes, and including expanded definitions, examples, and and further resources. Awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. The numbers show that readers are ready to do this work - let's give it to them. This workbook was born out of that challenge and the results have been life-changing.

Full of helpful advice and practical things you can actually address. Not comfortable reading, especially white silence, need to do better. The section about white silence and family is very perceptive, how many times do we let it go? None should be the answer.

Centique Amen to that! Great review Trish 😍 3y

Some great analysis here on white silence and how it maintains white supremacy.

Occasionally difficult to read, sure, but mainly this book was so practical, deep, and it built me up rather than broke me down. So many white people I know are so uncertain about how to do better on race, where they need to show up and what they need to do. This book and the activities in it has helped me so much moving on from guilt and feeling able to think deeply and do simple, good, practical stuff. Scary but also empowering

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4y

Past lunchtime in the UK now and I am still glued to the election coverage. I find the nausea is a lot worse when I go and try to do something worse than when I watch it so I‘m just sticking with it today. Reading me and white supremacy and working through the questions at the same time as watching it is intense but also feels useful, feels like a more important time to be doing this reading and thinking than ever! Forgive the laundry pls lol

alisiakae I‘m reading my book on the climate crisis, and checking in every 1/2 hr or so 4y
Lovesbooks87 I have had the news on since last night. Spent most of the night and morning feeling sick. Feeling a little bit more positive right now. 💙💙💙 4y

Lovesbooks87 @TheBookHippie when I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the results I was very close to be sick. It was like an awful flashback from 4 years ago! 4y
TheBookHippie @Lovesbooks87 I puked at 4am 4y
Emilymdxn @TheBookHippie @Lovesbooks87 I drank SO much coffee staying awake for the coverage from the UK I did such terrible things to my digestion 🥴 4y
SamAnne Yup. I feel so nauseous. But I'm trying to put my big girl pants on and figure out my plan for more conversation and reaching across the divides even in my little circle. I'm going to ask more questions and listen more rather than say “How could you vote for that guy?“ I know in my own family keeping a dialogue and conversation open has lessened homophobia, sexism and racism in people I'm close to. 4y
Bookwomble Opposite strategy for me - avoiding the rolling news, pundits and analysts, just checking in on the developing results every couple of hours. It's looking hopeful, now 🤞🏻 Obviously, the orange baby won't go without a tantrum! 4y

This text is full of important information, clearly states objectives, dives deep on terms I had a passing familiarity with, & created discomfort that needs to be felt in order to truly do anti-racism work. I plan on doing a yearly reread (over 28 days each time instead of the 2 days I took to consume the audiobook from my library) & reflecting on each journaling prompt.
