The Woman Who Read Too Much
The Woman Who Read Too Much: A Novel | Bahiyyih Nakhjavani
6 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Gossip was rife in the capital about the poetess of Qazvin. Some claimed she had been arrested for masterminding the murder of the grand Mullah, her uncle. Others echoed her words, and passed her poems from hand to hand. Everyone spoke of her beauty, and her dazzling intelligence. But most alarming to the Shah and the court was how the poetess could read. As her warnings and predictions became prophecies fulfilled, about the assassination of the Shah, the hanging of the Mayor, and the murder of the Grand Vazir, many wondered whether she was not only reading history but writing it as well. Was she herself guilty of the crimes she was foretelling? Set in the world of the Qajar monarchs, mayors, ministers, and mullahs, this book explores the dangerous and at the same time luminous legacy left by a remarkable person. Bahiyyih Nakhjavani offers a gripping tale that is at once a compelling history of a pioneering woman, a story of nineteenth century Iran told from the street level up, and a work that is universally relevant to our times.

Pickpick

I finished this one the other day. It was a strange and interesting read. Set in the mid 1800's in Persia, in the world of Qajar monarchs and others of importance, it tells the stories of an intertwined cast of characters. It revolves around the poetess of Qazvin, who is based on a true character about whom little is known, and focuses on women and education and reading - their struggles for more than their lives allow.

Help! I have all the library books and need to know which are must reads and which it's ok to skip. I posted the full list here: http://amckiereads.com/2017/02/05/library-loot-help-needed/

Lindy If you want to have read the Canada Reads titles before the discussion, then Nostalgia. Asking for It is worthwhile anytime; put it off for near future if you are swamped with other heavy nonfiction. 8y
Tcip Wangs is a good book but you have so much going on here I would rather read asking for it. It's a more important book than wangs. 8y
Megabooks Agree strongly with @irre ! 8y

Does anyone else here suffer from reader's palm? My hand is really hurting, the area your local chiromancer would call the Mound of Venus (by the thumb.)

Gah! I shouldn't even be posting here I guess. Nor should I have gotten rid of that Netflix either, eh?

Soubhiville @kspenmoll @LauraJ I have to remove the tassels or I'll never see them again. Tassels don't stand a chance! 😈😼 8y
Zelma I swear by my magnetic one for that purpose! 😂 8y
Lizpixie I have an old swivel recliner in my library and I dropped something down the side and asked my daughter to reach it for me. She came back up with a fistful of bookmarks that have slid off my lap over the past year. 15 of them.😏 8y
Soubhiville @Lizpixie that's so funny!!! 😆 8y
