My Ears Are Bent
My Ears Are Bent | Joseph Mitchell
3 posts | 3 read
As a young newspaper reporter in 1930s New York, Joseph Mitchell interviewed fan dancers, street evangelists, voodoo conjurers, not to mention a lady boxer who also happened to be a countess. Mitchell haunted parts of the city now vanished: the fish market, burlesque houses, tenement neighborhoods, and storefront churches. Whether he wrote about a singing first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers or a nudist who does a reverse striptease, Mitchell brilliantly illuminated the humanity in the oddest New Yorkers. These pieces, written primarily for The World-Telegram and The Herald Tribune, highlight his abundant gifts of empathy and observation, and give us the full-bodied picture of the famed New Yorker writer Mitchell would become. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

This collection of newspaper articles from the 1930‘s had a few really interesting ones and then a couple that while they were definitely of the time, they were tough to read now. His perspective of NYC from many different walks of life, rich and poor, during this pivotal time was illuminating and revealing. #BookspinBingo #roll100 @TheAromaofBooks @PuddleJumper

A slightly book related question today. I recently developped tinitus due to an inner-ear infection. This means I have a constant high pitched beep in my ear, it's there 24/7, and it's permanent. I am ok during the day but when reading it's been very difficult. Are there more readers here with tinitus? And if you do have this too, do you have any advise? Any tips or tricks?

Kalalalatja Oh I am so sorry to hear that! I don't have any tips for you, but sending lots of love 💕 8y
Sarah83 I don't have this problem either, but my colleague has problems with this too. He puts in his earphones and listens to music. He says, depending to which music you listen, you don't hear the tinnitus any more. Maybe this helps you too? ✊ 8y
KVanRead So sorry to hear that! I wonder if headphones and audiobooks would help at all. 8y

underthebelljar I get tinnitus sometimes and having background noise helps me. I'll turn on my space heater or fan and that helps me focus on reading. I think ambient music might work too. (edited) 8y
Bibliogeekery My mom has tinnitus and she uses a white noise machine which helps her a lot 8y
Reviewsbylola Oh no, that's awful. I hope you find some relief! 8y
rockpools I often get a deep rumbling tinnitus, like a car engine idling. White noise does help and can be less distracting than music. There are apps where you can try out different white noise or background sounds like https://mynoise.net . I hope you find something that helps. 8y
I-read-and-eat @Kalalalatja @Sarah83 @KVanRead @BookishJess @Bibliogeekery @Reviewsbylola @RachelO Thanks, you are all so sweet ❤ I will definately try a white noise app or machine. Any music with lyrisch distracts me but some instrumental music might work. Thank you so much for all the great advise 😘❤ 8y

“I would like to be a nun and live a life of sacrifice,” she says. “I am practically a nun now. The only difference between me and a nun is that I smoke, and drink a little booze, and talk rough. Except for things like that, I am a nun.”
