Tigers, Not Daughters
Tigers, Not Daughters | Samantha Mabry
10 posts | 7 read | 15 to read
The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escape from their needy and despotic widowed father, and from their San Antonio neighborhood, full of old San Antonio families and all the traditions and expectations that go along with them. In the summer after her senior year of high school, Ana, the oldest sister, falls to her death from her bedroom window. A year later, her three younger sisters, Jessica, Iridian, and Rosa, are still consumed by grief and haunted by their sisters memory. Their dream of leaving Southtown now seems out of reach. But then strange things start happening around the house: mysterious laughter, mysterious shadows, mysterious writing on the walls. The sisters begin to wonder if Ana really is haunting them, trying to send them a messageand what exactly shes trying to say. In a stunning follow-up to her National Book Awardlonglisted novel All the Wind in the World, Samantha Mabry weaves an aching, magical novel that is one part family drama, one part ghost story, and one part love story.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 252.

I read this book in one sitting and I absolutely loved the story-telling! Follows 3 sisters in their grief after their 4th sister falls out a window to her death… and then starts haunting them. I will now be disappointed if my sisters don‘t haunt me in death.

Really haunting, yet beautiful YA read about what three grieving sisters will do to escape unhealthy environments. Loved the magical realism thread throughout! #arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I highly recommend this contemporary novel for fans of all ages looking for a lyrical and beautiful story full of resilience, sisterhood and the often claustrophobic feeling teenage girls can have when it feels like all eyes are on them but no one is reaching out. This talented author is one to watch, 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *My review copy was provided by the publisher for the Spring 2021 blog tour

The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escaping their neglectful, needy father and their San Antonio neighborhood expectations, until the oldest, Ana, falls to her death.

I was always weary of magical realism books, after reading a few I really love them. This one did not disappoint. There is a lot going on with the sisters and this story deals with it all: trauma, grief, female empowerment and ghost. Great writing done in each sisters POV.

Haunting and beautifully written, Tigers, Not Daughters by Samantha Mabry is a raw, empowering, and deeply moving story about grief, self-discovery, and the unbreakable bond between sisters. It‘s a tragic, painful, and dark story, but it‘s also wonderfully healing, hopeful and filled with so much love.

Before heading home from work yesterday, I made a final stop at one of our local indie bookstores to pick up a curbside order for some highly anticipated reads before their hours of operation and services were affected by our statewide lockdown.

They are a landmark institution in our community and it saddens me that so much uncertainty lies ahead for both them as well as other small businesses.

Continued in comments ⬇️

Librariana When I called to place my order, I was greeted by Vanessa's friendly voice and she assured me that all three titles I was looking for were available on their shelves. I enthusiastically thanked her and told her how much their store means to our city... how grateful we all are for their flexibility and adaptability... their phenomenal, personalized service, especially at a time like this... and ultimately, how appreciative I was (1 of 2) 5y
Librariana for their part in granting me this small bit of happiness and normalcy amidst these troubling times.

I realize that purchasing a couple of books right now is a small luxury, one I do not take for granted, but I hope this tiny purchase can add to those of others in helping these local businesses remain with us... that we see them, open and thriving, on the other side of this pandemic 💜

Hooked_on_books Wonderful love note to your store. If you like audio, Libro.fm works with indie stores and they are doing a couple of deals right now in which all of the proceeds go to the bookstore. The options are buying one credit for $14.99 or starting a membership for that same price and getting 2 books. They have a list of stores on their site, so you can see if your store participates. It‘s a great way to support stores right now. 5y
