The Rules of Attraction
The Rules of Attraction | Bret Easton Ellis
16 posts | 58 read | 17 to read
Set at a small, affluent liberal-arts college in New England at the height of the Reagan 80s, The Rules of Attraction is a startlingly funny, kaleidoscopic novel about three students with no plans for the future--or even the present--who become entangled in a curious romantic triangle. Bret Easton Ellis trains his incisive gaze on the kids at self-consciously bohemian Camden College and treats their sexual posturings and agonies with a mixture of acrid hilarity and compassion while exposing the moral vacuum at the center of their lives.Lauren changes boyfriends every time she changes majors and still pines for Victor who split for Europe months ago and she might or might not be writing anonymous love letter to ambivalent, hard-drinking Sean, a hopeless romantic who only has eyes for Lauren, even if he ends up in bed with half the campus, and Paul, Lauren's ex, forthrightly bisexual and whose passion masks a shrewd pragmatism. They waste time getting wasted, race from Thirsty Thursday Happy Hours to Dressed To Get Screwed parties to drinks at The Edge of the World or The Graveyard. The Rules of Attraction is a poignant, hilarious take on the death of romance.

I am just glad it is done. This #noir of young people just callously sharing partners and staying drunk or high is not my cup of tea. I kept waiting for someone to die of an overdose or receive a deadly STD. I should not have read it two weeks before taking my little, sheltered girl to college for her freshman year.

This book is full, so far, of nameless and mindless sex and hard drugs. The reason I checked it out was because it fit New Hampshire and 1987. The two challenges I am trying to finish from LAST year.

Would this be considered a classic now?

I will finish this book. I will put down my phone and finish the book.

I should have reread A Separate Peace - at least I remember enjoying that one in highschool.

TrishB I have disliked everything by this author. 3y
Alfoster @TrishB I so agree with you! I would never consider his books classics!👊 3y
Butterfinger @TrishB I doubt if I ever get another one of his. I hope you have been well. 3y
TrishB @Alfoster probably cult classics! 3y
TrishB @Butterfinger you probably won‘t! I‘ve been plodding along 😁 hope you‘re ok. 3y

9-20-20: My 72nd finished book of 2020! I tried but I really didn‘t love this novel. The storyline and the characters were equally unlikeable. I normally enjoy Ellis‘s novels.....⭐️⭐️ #therulesofattraction #breteastonellis 👎🏼📖#️⃣7️⃣2️⃣

Pickpick

A fun read. Stylistically I loved the multiple viewpoints, and it all ties together nicely, with the random narrators providing a neat touch. Ellis is an original. He never fails to be daring.

I had never seen Raymond so keyed-up. He looked like he was going to cry and he gave this event (a Freshman suicide? oh, please) a dimension of unwarranted emotion.

I mean, unless you like the movie. And in some cases the movie is actually better #movies #judgeabookbyitsmovie
