Reel Verse: Poems about the Movies | Harold Schechter, Michael Waters
post image
Mehso-so

This was a mixed bag. Many of the poems were about or in praise of films I am not familiar with. This hindered my reading experience a bit. The standouts tended to deal with film more generally. I have sought out collections by two poets, Sonia Greenfield and Gregory Djanikian, so I‘ll count that as a win. Definitely recommend it for someone who‘s more of a film buff than I am.

I absolutely ADORE these films and have had this for ages and had not read it. Omg I love it as much as the movies. There‘s always been magic in these stories.

1-19-23: My 7th finished book of 2023! I adore Mel Brooks. I was raised watching his movies, especially Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Spaceballs and Robin Hood. Reading his story from the beginning was fascinating. How he got into writing as a young man and just climbed that ladder of success. The love story of him and his wife Anne Bancroft is equally compelling. He‘s a funny story teller and a lover of life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣7️⃣

SamAnne Recently listened to his interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. Made me put this memoir on the TBR list! 2w

I received this as a gift from my brother several yrs ago & although I have dipped into it periodically since, I really utilized it last year as I went through a period of exploring a lot of older films! Some of my favorites watched in '22 that this book prompted me to check out: Pandora's Box, Touch of Evil, Dog Day Afternoon, Lady From Shanghai, The Good The Bad & The Ugly. Also the 50th Anniversary of Godfather was a '22 moviegoing highlight.

I love popcorn, but it is a rare treat for me. My first job was in a concession stand at a movie theater & it wasn't until several years later that I actually regained my appreciation for the moviegoing treat.
Also, if you haven't watched Arrival, please please do so. It is one of the best film adaptations of a short story.

Imagine you are on a long car trip in a junk car in your twenties with your best friend who happens to be Quentin Tarantino. I loved this book, I love how much he loves movies, he makes me want to love movies. He makes you feel like you need to see these movies. It‘s like you are sitting in a movie trailer on the set in the 70‘s. He describes the screenplays, and how they are different than the actual movie. The actors, directors, a fun read

A perfect book for cinephiles. Tarantino‘s passion is infectious and his knowledge is unparalleled. If you want a book of accessible film criticism, check this out.

Oh my gosh it took me forever to finish this. It was good and definitely ended on a lighter note than the last one but there were so many name drops and the timeline was kind of unclear in some parts so I had to go back and reread who was who.

Last night I attended a book club of the original Sense & Sensibility paired with a showing of the 1995 version of the movie at a local indie theatre. It was just delightful to hear the laughter and gasps from an audience that loved the movie so deeply. What a joy to be celebrating and discussing Austen‘s work centuries after it was written.
