The Hollow Gods
The Hollow Gods | Vrana A. J.

Black Hollow is a town with a dark secret. For centuries, residents have foretold the return of the Dreamwalkeran ominous figure from local folklore said to lure young women into the woods and possess them. Yet the boundary between fact and fable is blurred by a troubling statistic: occasionally, women do go missing. And after they return, they almost always end up dead. When Kai wakes up next to the lifeless body of a recently missing girl, his memory blank, he struggles to clear his already threadbare conscience. Miya, a floundering university student, experiences signs that she may be the Dreamwalkers next victim. Can she trust Kai as their paths collide, or does he herald her demise? And after losing a young patient, crestfallen oncologist, Mason, embarks on a quest to debunk the towns superstitions, only to find his sanity tested. A maelstrom of ancient grudges, forgotten traumas, and deadly secrets loom in the foggy forests of Black Hollow. Can three unlikely heroes put aside their fears and unite to confront a centuries-old evil? Will they uncover the truth behind the fable, or will the cycle repeat?

I‘m on track to finish THE HOLLOW GODS today. It‘s a mixed one: Vrana absolutely piqued my curiosity early on, but the pace is so slow that I‘m getting tired of waiting for answers. I‘m not sure she‘ll EVER give me a satisfactory explanation for why this BC town was apparently founded at the same time as European settlements in Ontario, either, or for the conspicuous lack of Indigeneity in the worldbuilding. Seems like the whole town‘s White.

Kobo gave me a free VIP membership a little while back, and last night I went WILD at the members-only sale. Three books for $0.89! One book for $0.53! A freebie that wouldn‘t fit nicely into the picture! My spending was out of control!

(NB: THE GENTLE ART OF FORTUNE HUNTING is only $0.99 for everybody, VIP or no. I‘ve already read and loved it, and I absolutely think you should get it from your etailer of choice if you‘re into awesome things.)

AbigailJaneBlog The gentle art of fortune hunting is GREAT! I also recommend the Will Darling Adventures by the same author 💕 2y

The Echoed Realm is a very worthy sequel. This book dives deeper into the unique and multi-faceted world Vrana has created. The characters are resilient and bold, yet each has their own voice and tone. The aspect I appreciate the most is the writing style; it's engaging and exciting. This series definitely needs more attention!
My photos won't be as elaborate as I'd like for a while. I'm struggling with a torn tendon and ligament in my elbow.

Unpopular opinion: this was a rather dull read. Although I had read a lot of positive reviews about the book I DNF at 42%.

The main characters weren't very interesting. The dark and deadly mystery didn't keep me reading, probably also because the pacing of the story is slow and clunky for the most part of the book.

YA readers might like the Insta-love between wolf/man and witchy girl, they might also dig Mason's obsession with Kai's blood.

2/5⭐

It was as though his repayment brought him no joy , as though despite leading her home, he knew that she was still lost, and he still alone.

Maybe it was childish, but Miya lamented that reality wasn‘t a fairy tale she could rewrite with the power of her imagination. Reality wasn‘t timeless or enchanting; it was finite and perilous.

Don‘t lose your way, she heard the wind hiss an ominous spell, or there‘ll be hell to pay.
