Road Out of Winter
Road Out of Winter: a novel | Alison Stine
8 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
In an endless winter, she carries seeds of hope Wylodine comes from a world of paranoia and povertyher family grows marijuana illegally, and life has always been a battle. Now shes been left behind to tend the crop alone. Then spring doesnt return for the second year in a row, bringing unprecedented extreme winter. With grow lights stashed in her truck and a pouch of precious seeds, she begins a journey, determined to start over away from Appalachian Ohio. But the icy roads and strangers hidden in the hills are treacherous. After a harrowing encounter with a violent cult, Wylodine and her small group of exiles become a target for its volatile leader. Because she has the most valuable skill in the climate chaos: she can make things grow. With the gripping suspense of The Road and the lyricism of Station Eleven, Stines vision is of a changing world where an unexpected hero searches for a place hope might take root.

I slowed down for Grayson. He shuffled to keep up, his boot scrapping the asphalt. I felt better once we had stepped into the trees, into cover-that was in my blood, the impulse to hide, to sneak. If you kept secrets for a living, you start keeping them all the time. You kept secrets for practice, for no reason at all.

This chilling dystopian novel was perfect for early morning reading while huddled under a blanket. How would you survive if winter never ended?

I can‘t thank Goodreads enough for this advanced read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I‘m not sure if the author intended it, but I identified some Wizard Of Oz parallels. It‘s a story about the search for “home” and all of the different characters you meet on the road. No worries if you‘re not a WOZ fan. It is also quite different. It‘s definitely not set in a beautiful landscape. In this story, it‘s winter all year round.

If I could pick one season to have as never-ending...winter would be the last one I would pick. Winter all-year-round would literally be a dystopian hellscape for me. Although, this particular hellscape feels like it could be an all too real scenario and this makes for a compelling, albeit alarming listen...one that I was completely there for.

There's nothing that I'm specifically disliking about this book 50 pages in, but it just isn't grabbing me. Probably a case of it's not you, it's me.

Avanders What an amazing cover tho... 4y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Avanders I like the cover too! 4y

Starting chapter two of this dystopian novel. It's supposed to be a mix between The Road and Station Eleven, but I haven't read either so I'm not sure what that means. Also ... that ring on my finger is new, I just got engaged!!! 💍💘

I really enjoyed this dystopian! It‘s dark, gritty, and perhaps a little too realistic, which makes it even scarier.

My 6th book for #NetGalleyReviewathon, but I can‘t post my full review until 8/29... I‘m doing a blog tour for the first time, and that‘s my day. 😬

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JazzFeathers Ooooh! Blog tours are fun. I made a few on my blog. 4y
sprainedbrain @JazzFeathers I‘m still trying to figure it all out, but I‘m excited! 4y
JazzFeathers @sprainedbrain Just be ready with your review on your blog your assigned day. Don't forget to add the list of all the other dates in your post. Then have fun visiting the other partecipants. It's easy and fun 😉 4y
LauraRenae Is there a specific goal for #netgalleyreviewathon? 4y
sprainedbrain @LauraRenae nope! Everyone is setting their own goals or just trying to focus on reading/reviewing their NetGalley backlog. I personally am trying to get 80% ratio (finally). 😬 4y
