The Very First Damned Thing
The Very First Damned Thing | Jodi Taylor
16 posts | 29 read | 4 to read
Ever wondered how it all began? It's two years since the final victory at the Battersea Barricades. The fighting might be finished, but for Dr Bairstow, just now setting up St Mary's, the struggle is only beginning. How will he assemble his team? From where will his funding come? How can he overcome the massed ranks of the Society for the Protection of Historical Buildings? How do stolen furniture, a practical demonstration at the Stirrup Charge at Waterloo, students' alcohol-ridden urine, a widowed urban guerrilla, a young man wearing exciting knitwear, and four naked security guards all combine to become the St Mary's of the future?

This is an excellent story about how St Mary‘s came about and how the “cast” joined it, with enough vagueness to set up future plots. The author narrated it herself and I thought it was perfect. @julesG I agree that this should be read after reading the second or third book, once you know the characters better. Officially it should be read after the first book. Such an extraordinarily fun series. #serieslove2023

TheSpineView Awesome!📖📘📚 2y
julesG I think Jodi said/wrote somewhere that although it is numbered as #0.5 it is best read after book 3 or 4. I slipped it in after book 5, because there is no short story between 5 and 6. 😁 2y
Texreader @julesG That was a good idea! I saw that space between books 5-6 and thought it odd. I‘m loving them so much. I actually prefer listening to her read over reading IRL. But alas I don‘t want to spend money on audio since I already have the books. 2y
julesG I know it sounds crazy, because I'm always such a Scrooge, but I have the signed paperbacks, eBooks and most audiobooks. The short stories are free when you have an active Audible membership. 2y

I should have listened to this short story after I finished book 1 in the series. Now I‘m in book 3, but I‘m going to go ahead and listen to it slightly out of order. #serieslove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

TheSpineView At least you are reading behind and not ahead. 2y

Still trying to play catch up from the books I read earlier this year. I am in love with this series. This is a very short prequel but a good one. I bought more of the series on audible for super cheap on Prime Day! Can‘t wait for more! #seriesread #booked2021 #under150pages

TheSpineView Great job! 👍📖 3y

Time to start a new series 😁

DGRachel Have you read Just One Damn Thing After Another? I strongly recommend starting with that one as it‘s the first full novel before listening to this short story. Chronologically, this comes first, but you‘ll enjoy it more if you read in publication order. 6y
WeeWeegieBookworm @DGRachel that would probably have been a good idea 😂 still enjoying it though. Will probably go back and listen to this one again after I've read a couple of books in the series. 6y

This short story about the setting up of St. Mary‘s and the assembly of the original staff for the time traveling, er, historical research team at the old priory is labeled as a prequel to the Chronicles of St. Mary‘s, but I wouldn‘t start here. Read ‘Just One Damned Thing After Another‘ (first-in-series) and then come back to this one in print: Lots of delicious “Aha!” moments.

Historical event featured: Part of the Battle at Waterloo

Dogearedcopy 🎧 I read the the print first and then found the audio, narrated by the author is available for free on Audible.com. The narration uninspired and uninspiring, curiously devoid of any light heartedness or humor. I definitely recommend the print over the audio. (edited) 6y
DGRachel I believe Zara Ramm narrates all of the other books and short stories and she is phenomenal. I agree that Jodi‘s narration of her own work leaves a lot to be desired, but I would give Zara a chance, if you like audiobooks. 6y
Dogearedcopy @DGRachel Um, yeah. I guess you could say I like audiobooks 😁 I‘ll be listening to Zara Ramm on another free audio short story, “When a Child is Born” (St. Mary‘s 2.5) later today 🎧 (edited) 6y
Dragon Thanks @Dogearedcopy sounds so interesting! Downloaded the recommended first book onto my Kindle Paperwhite 👍 6y

O the Joy of discovering a new series!📚 Fun Time Travel and Tea with a side bit of serious commentary on historical events. Bought Book 1 because of name - Just One Damn Thing After Another. How could I resist? 🤓 Was glad I read this short story Prequel afterwards. Ending was such an aha moment to the first. 💡#timeywhimey #chronicalsofstmarys #latetotheparty

A fun, short prequel to the series, narrated by the author and written from Dr. Bairstow's perspective! (Can you tell I'm hooked?!? Going to download the third book now! I've had some killer headaches this week, PLUS there's been noisy construction happening in my basement, so audiobooks have been a lifesaver. 🙌)

catieohjoy Obviously I read/listened to this after the first two books, but I sort of wish I'd listened to it immediately before the first one! The image it ends on leads very nicely into the opening scene of the first book. 😃 8y

This short audiobook (2.5 hours) gives some backstory on the series. Based on this, I will give the series a try. Kudos as well to the author as the narrator for this audiobook.

DGRachel This series is FANTASTIC! Zara Ramm narrates all of the other audio versions and she does an incredible job. 8y

On the road back to New England today, so starting a new audiobook (I can't read in the car without risk of being seriously ill). I've heard good things about this series and found this free short story on Audible a little while ago.

annahenke Thanks for the tip! Love this series and just downloaded it. 😊 8y

LOVED THIS!! I am so excited that is an established series and that there are many more full length novels and short stories to read!! Based on this first, short installment this should prove to be a fabulously entertaining series!

Thought I'd read the short story prequel before diving into Book 1. 15 seconds in and Jodi Taylor has won my heart by ranking the invention of chocolate right up there with the discovery of fire and the development of the wheel. Clearly this author has got her priorities straight!

Leelee08 I've been wanting to read this series so bad! I was hoping to hear some reviews so I could make up my mind😀😀 8y
