The Shelf: 'Utter perfection' Marian Keyes | Helly Acton
11 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
'Utter PERFECTION!' Marian Keyes 'Fun, fresh and thought-provoking' Lindsey Kelk 'A witty, life-affirming page-turner' Woman & Home A funny, feminist and all-too-relatable novel about our obsession with coupling up, settling down and the battle we all have with accepting ourselves, The Shelf introduces the freshest new voice in women's fiction. Ever feel like you're losing a race you never signed up for? Everyone in Amy's life seems to be getting married, having children and settling down (or so Instagram tells her), and she feels like she's falling behind. So, when her long-term boyfriend surprises her with a dream holiday, she thinks he's going to finally pop the Big Question. But the dream turns into a nightmare when, instead, she finds herself on the set of a Big Brother-style reality television show, The Shelf. Along with five other women, Amy is brutally dumped live on TV and must compete in a series of humiliating and obnoxious tasks in the hope of being crowned 'The Keeper'. While inside the house, will Amy learn that there are worse things than being 'left on the shelf'?

I really enjoyed this book however I am going to say it‘s more of a guilty pleasure like as I feel like the book came across rather sexist. But it‘s written by a women so I kinda feel like there was a point behind it which I‘ve missed. The book follows a women who gets dumped on a live TV show along with 6 others where after they remain in a big brother style house to compete in challenges for a prize of Q9M.
I gave this book 5 stars ✨

This was such a fun, deeper-than-you‘d-imagine story! I‘ve been enjoying reality shows since Covid began (it‘s my escape!) and this was a sort of behind the scenes look into what living in a reality house and having every aspect of your life scrutinized and made fun of would really be like. It also has a great feministic theme running through it about being whole as yourself and being true to who you really are and not pretending to be anyone 👇🏻

candc320 (Cont‘d) else just to make a romantic partner love you. Such a great message and a fun read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 oh also this is my #doublebookspin for #bookspinbingo! (edited) 3y

My July 2021 #bookspinbingo list! I‘m doing it early because we‘re leaving early Saturday morning for a week long vacation at a cabin in Georgia and I‘ve got to work tomorrow and do all the packing when I get home. All I‘ve managed to pack so far are car snacks and a big tote bag full of books 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Sweettartlaura Oh, you‘re fine - I have a flight I have to leave for in … 3y

This was so good!

Amy‘s boyfriend packs her off to a tv studio to take part in The Shelf, a tv show where women are promptly dumped then shoved in a Big Brother style house to take lessons on how to be a better partner and be crowned “The Keeper”.

This is a great book that explores feminism, sisterhood & learning how to love yourself.

It was one of those books which took me by surprise a bit. The characters are great and I love its message.

Lunch and a book! What could be better?

Tuna Nicoise with a homemade honey Dijon dressing which I must say is beaut! (That‘s rare for me because I‘m usually a disaster in the kitchen unless I‘m baking).

Enjoying this book so far, the situation the MC is in is ridiculous, but purposefully so.

PS I‘ve just set up a dedicated book twitter if anyone wants to follow. I‘ll follow back! https://twitter.com/lovetoreadlive1

My partner has been making some preparations in anticipation of me eventually moving in with him. One shelf for him, two for me, for my short-term TBR pile. When he‘s cleared one of bedrooms, we‘ll be getting some bookcases for all my other books!

ValPenny There are never enough bookcases and never too many books! 4y
LapReader My partner of 5 years wants me to move in but I enjoy my own space and don‘t want to raise his children full time. I am using a week of my long service leave this week to fix some plumbing issues in my house but staying at his place. He thinks taking time off work is a waste of holidays and said ‘What will we use for our honeymoon?‘ We aren‘t even engaged! 😂 4y
Crazeedi @LapReader it's good to have your own space for sure, when I got married for 2nd time, my hubby fixed one room just for me, it's my refuge. Fortunately we live in an old farmhouse so there is room to have space when you need it! And he vf has a big garage, so he spends his time there 4y

If there is a book that should end up being turned into a movie then this book should be. We‘ve all watched some form of reality TV shows like Big Brother. You may or may not like them, but I think this book beats them hands down! I found this book to be so funny with a few cringe worthy moments. I just couldn‘t put it down.
My Rating: 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
