Nora & her dad take a trip on her bday, also the anniversary of her mother‘s passing from a shooting, to a canyon to hike. Their plans change from fun to terror as the unexpected happens and suddenly Nora is fighting for her life, alone. This story, in verse is a gripping survival story in the desert, a prickly painful processing of grief, & a sweet heartfelt story of hope beyond our worst nightmares. Beautiful, lyrical, poignant, I was in tears.

I listened to this on audio, but once I realized most of the chapters were written in verse I also had to download an ebook version to see the poetic form. It is an important aspect of the storytelling. Nora is already struggling to deal with one traumatic event when she faces another life changing event.

Reading Dusti Bowling‘s new novel in verse on this super cold, rainy day. I am loving this story of a girl and her Dad separated and struggling for survival in the desert. Emotional and engaging...and I am especially interested to read the author‘s note at the end where she reveals the inspiration for the story. 💔 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m super late with this—I‘ve been totally distracted by the election—but the prompt immediately made me think of the tagged middle grade book. It‘s the story of a girl who is hiking in a slot canyon with her father when there‘s a flash flood. They are separated & she loses all her gear. She has to believe in herself, trust her skills, & use everything she‘s learned to survive the night & find her father.

A slow reading month for me in July—only 11 books. The good news is I liked all of them. The tagged book was my favorite. It‘s a stunning, powerful middle grade book, a rewarding for readers of all ages. Brennan‘s Fence novel was just straight up fun and as over the top as I hoped and expected. And, Elliott‘s Unconquerable Sun was space opera on a grand scale and a fantastic start to her new series.

Wow. This middle grade book is a stunner & one of my favorite reads of the year. As they struggle to overcome a tragedy that has reshaped their lives, Nora & her father go hiking in a slot canyon. When disaster strikes, each decision becomes a matter of life & death & Nora has to confront her doubts & fears & learn how to trust & believe in herself again if she is to survive. A thrilling story of survival, courage, & resilience. Highly recommended

Up next, another middle grade ARC. Told in verse, it‘s the story of a young girl and her father who are on a hiking trip when things go terribly wrong. This one is out 9/8.
