“I love you and I‘m sorry and hold on are the last things he says to me though I barley hear the words over the screaming in my mind.”
This story shows that, just like Nora, we all have things that scare us or make us feel sad, but we can find courage to keep going. After reading about Nora‘s adventure, think about a time you were brave or overcame something difficult.
Throughout the book we follow Nora, a young girl who faces unimaginable challenges after a flash flood separates her from her father during a climbing trip in the Arizona desert. Still grieving her mother, who was lost in a tragic shooting a year before, Nora struggles with the emotional and physical toll of survival. Now alone, she must confront her fears and face dangerous wildlife.
“Sometimes the edge of a canyon is a little scary, but it can also lead to a new beginning.“
Join Nora on her adventure in The Canyon's Edge! This exciting story takes you through the stunning Grand Canyon as Nora faces challenges and learns about bravery after a big loss. Perfect for young readers who love adventure and stories about finding strength in tough times.

I‘ve read many middle grade books written in verse, and if I were in my classroom today, I might have shared a stack. However, from home, the first one that came to mind that I hadn‘t already seen shared was this one about a girl dealing with a few truly difficult experiences.
My review includes a few examples of the poetic form used in the story. https://litsy.com/p/eG1FQmRpYzdn

Nora & her dad take a trip on her bday, also the anniversary of her mother‘s passing from a shooting, to a canyon to hike. Their plans change from fun to terror as the unexpected happens and suddenly Nora is fighting for her life, alone. This story, in verse is a gripping survival story in the desert, a prickly painful processing of grief, & a sweet heartfelt story of hope beyond our worst nightmares. Beautiful, lyrical, poignant, I was in tears.
I listened to this on audio, but once I realized most of the chapters were written in verse I also had to download an ebook version to see the poetic form. It is an important aspect of the storytelling. Nora is already struggling to deal with one traumatic event when she faces another life changing event.

One year after a random shooting changed their family forever, Nora and her father are exploring a slot canyon deep in the Arizona desert, hoping it will help them find peace....a great survival story in the #desert #julyjourneys @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I ate 9/10 fingernails reading this fictional account of a girl trapped alone in a canyon... on her birthday... a year after losing her mama in an exceptionally traumatic way. I need a good YA rom com to calm me down. Any suggestions?
Reading Dusti Bowling‘s new novel in verse on this super cold, rainy day. I am loving this story of a girl and her Dad separated and struggling for survival in the desert. Emotional and engaging...and I am especially interested to read the author‘s note at the end where she reveals the inspiration for the story. 💔 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A year after the death of her mother in a restaurant shooting, Nora is left struggling to stay alive when a climbing trip with her father goes terribly wrong. Gripping YA novel about survival both in nature and inside oneself #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

I‘m super late with this—I‘ve been totally distracted by the election—but the prompt immediately made me think of the tagged middle grade book. It‘s the story of a girl who is hiking in a slot canyon with her father when there‘s a flash flood. They are separated & she loses all her gear. She has to believe in herself, trust her skills, & use everything she‘s learned to survive the night & find her father.

A slow reading month for me in July—only 11 books. The good news is I liked all of them. The tagged book was my favorite. It‘s a stunning, powerful middle grade book, a rewarding for readers of all ages. Brennan‘s Fence novel was just straight up fun and as over the top as I hoped and expected. And, Elliott‘s Unconquerable Sun was space opera on a grand scale and a fantastic start to her new series.
Wow. This middle grade book is a stunner & one of my favorite reads of the year. As they struggle to overcome a tragedy that has reshaped their lives, Nora & her father go hiking in a slot canyon. When disaster strikes, each decision becomes a matter of life & death & Nora has to confront her doubts & fears & learn how to trust & believe in herself again if she is to survive. A thrilling story of survival, courage, & resilience. Highly recommended
Up next, another middle grade ARC. Told in verse, it‘s the story of a young girl and her father who are on a hiking trip when things go terribly wrong. This one is out 9/8.
Also, I love this cover!
