10 Blind Dates
10 Blind Dates | Ashley Elston
Sophie wants one thing for Christmas-a little freedom from her overprotective parents. So when they decide to spend Christmas in South Louisiana with her very pregnant older sister, Sophie is looking forward to some much needed private (read: make-out) time with her long-term boyfriend, Griffin. Except it turns out that Griffin wants a little freedom from their relationship. Cue devastation. Heartbroken, Sophie flees to her grandparents' house, where the rest of her boisterous extended family is gathered for the holiday. That's when her nonna devises a (not so) brilliant plan: Over the next ten days, Sophie will be set up on ten different blind dates by different family members. Like her sweet cousin Sara, who sets her up with a hot guy at an exclusive underground party. Or her crazy aunt Patrice, who signs Sophie up for a lead role in a living nativity. With a boy who barely reaches her shoulder. And a screaming baby. When Griffin turns up unexpectedly and begs for a second chance, Sophie feels more confused than ever. Because maybe, just maybe, she's started to have feelings for someone else . . . Someone who is definitely not available. This is going to be the worst Christmas break ever . . . or is it?

As a sucker for matchmaking tropes, this book worked for me. I wish there had been more of just shutting down the ex and less let‘s give him a chance. I feel like at points I didn‘t really know what was going on or who the characters were (because it‘s like a 15-20 person family plus the kids), but that seemed to only last a few pages. This book definitely needed a family tree though! 4⭐️

Characters were so realistic, I loved to follow their lives and see what happens next. Sophie had a big heart and loved to see how she got connected with her childhood friends again. Sophie had quite a family, and like in real life some were fun, some were caring and some were annoying.

Even though this was set in Christmas time, this was also a perfect summer read: cute & light.

Predictable but I didn't mind.

Friends, I‘m ashamed of myself; I cheated and read my first #AuldLangSpine title in late 2022 instead of early 2023. It was just THERE, being all holidaisical and tempting, and the next thing I knew I‘d gulped it down. And it was lovely! While the blind dates are fun, the very best part is watching Sophie revitalize her connections with various members of her large and involved family. Y‘all know I love a good family-centric story. ❤️

monalyisha Absolutely no shame coming your way! In the face of such seasonal temptation, I would‘ve done the same. 😉 2y
MeganAnn I‘m so glad you liked it! And no shame at all… in fact I‘m really glad you had the opportunity to read it during the holiday season. I loved Sophie‘s family. They made what could have been just another cute story so much more full. I gulped this one down too. 2y
xicanti @monalyisha it was so fun to read each scene just a few days behind when the MC lived it! 2y
xicanti @MeganAnn the family stuff is so great! I got really emotional at the end. 2y

I just spent a really excellent chunk of time combing through @MeganAnn ‘s #AuldLangSpine list! There are a few books I‘ve already read and a few that aren‘t available to me, but I‘m super excited about the 14 that‘re left. Some have been on my mental list for ages!

I think I‘ll start with the tagged book for holiday proximity, but I reserve the right to glom on to any of the others as the mood hits me (and the library allows).

monalyisha Sigh, Gone was my absolute favorite book this year. Looks like a fun list! Have fun, you two! 👯‍♀️ 2y
xicanti @monalyisha it might be the one I‘m MOST EXCITED for. It sounds so good! 2y
MeganAnn Yay!! I‘m loving your list too (post coming shortly) 🎉 10 Blind Dates is an excellent starting point as it takes place in the week leading up to Christmas through the New Year… perfect for the holiday season. Sigh, Gone was SO good! I read it for this event last year as it was on @JackOBotts #newyearwhodis list. If I had to choose, that one would be a serious contender for my absolute favorite of the year too. @monalyisha 2y

xicanti @MeganAnn I love that one of your faves came from the event last year! I‘m the same; I read Addie LaRue because of @laughterhp ‘s list and it blew me away. 2y
MeganAnn Oooo good to know! Addie LaRue has been on my TBR for a long time and I‘ve loved some of Schwab‘s other books. 2y
JackOBotts @MeganAnn I‘m delighted Sigh, Gone was a top read for you this year. While I‘m not participating in #auldlangspine this year 😢, I will live (and read) vicariously through posts like these! Happy reading to you & @xicanti 💜 (edited) 2y
xicanti @JackOBotts here‘s hoping Sigh, Gone makes it into my Best of 2023 list and I can pass the rec along to someone else during Auld Lang Spine 2024! 2y

Tone & Mood
“ Is there no privacy at all in this family ?!“ The tone that the main character has in this line is attitude and anger because of her family trying to be in her business as far as her love life and anger because shes going through the motions or stages of a heartbreak while all of this is happening .

blurb
jadah04
10 Blind Dates | Ashley Elston

The title of “ 10 BLIND DATES “ is an allusion to a normal saying blind date which means no knowing who your going on a date with . The author uses this allusion to foreshadow basically what the character will go through in the story .

TheMrsShaw I will give you credit for this, but remember that an allusion is a reference to another work of art or pop culture. An example would be how the title of “The Sound and the Fury“ by William Faulkner is an allusion to a Shakespeare line from Macbeth that says life “is a tale/Told by an idiot/Full of sound and fury/Signifying nothing.“ 3y

The meaning of blind is you can't see anything at all . That is the denotation of blind. The way it is used in the context of the book title the connotation means that they don't know who they're about to go on a blind date with .

First book of the year!!!

This book was the perfect distraction from the post holiday blues! It takes place over the holidays, as newly single Sophie takes on the many blind dates her large family sets up for her.

I‘m not sure I‘d want to go on 10 blind dates (let alone ones my family set me up on 😳)! Thankfully, I don‘t have to worry about that!

What do you guys think? Could you do it?

Really cute YA holiday read! When Sophie is dumped just before Christmas, her extended family rallies to help her forget her ex and to help her have some holiday fun. She‘s set up on 10 blind dates before the New Year, but does she already know the person she‘s supposed to be with? It‘s about romance, but it‘s more about Sophie getting closer to her family members, which was even sweeter!

I had no idea what to do for today‘s prompt, but luckily, I started reading this today. There‘s a chapter where the MC, Sophie, is set up on a blind date where she has to play Mary to her date‘s Joseph in a living #nativityscene. It‘s freaking hilarious-a very fussy baby Jesus, a too-handsy Joseph, and a nearly electrocuted goat had me laughing out loud! I‘m enjoying this one so far!

Sophie will spend the holidays with her grandmother after she broke up with her boyfriend. There, grandma and part of an extended family decided to cheer her up by set her 10 blind dates before New Year. It was so cute and funny the dynamic of this extended family. It is predictable, very YA, an ok novel maybe so-so for some people but cute. Another perfect choice for your holiday hallmark mood🤗🎄3⭐️

BookBabe Wow, I never liked blind dates…I can‘t imagine going on 10 of them in quick succession! Yikes 😂 3y

I read this one a while back, but since the author just published another book with the same group of friends, I decided to give it a reread, and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. It's just such a fun & happy YA story & I love how it's just as much (or more) about Sophie reconnecting with & appreciating her family as it is about the romance. While one date was a little much, on the whole they manage to stay fun & entertaining.

I‘ve been wanting to read this for awhile & checked it out on Libby when I got distracted from my other books. The story was unexpected at times because it‘s really more about Sophie & her relationships with her extended family than the dates. Of course, the love interest is obvious but still fun. I especially enjoyed all the rivalry, gossip, & betting the family engages in about the dates. A fun YA novel with realistic worries about her sister.

A sweet adorable YA contemporary story. The huge family contained members who were all lovable in their own way. “Nonna” sounded like the perfect grandma. Very predictable from early on but thoroughly enjoyed the journey getting to the end. Made me laugh out loud in places - a great rom-com perfect for valentines 💕

Very cute and sweet. Sophia is a 17 year old who breaks up with her boyfriend, so her family sets her up on 10 blind dates to cheer her up. I loved the message that it‘s important to stay close to your family. However, my main gripe was the huge list of characters. I got confused which aunt/uncle/cousin was which.

This was cute and fun, a good distraction from reality. The angsty friends to lovers setup was fun, and I really enjoyed the family dynamics. The blind dates every day idea was creative, and worked very well with the characters. Pretty much brain candy, but I'm not sorry I listened to the audiobook!

The dates were pretty fun although could have done without the porn flick part; that was just weird. Overall though - pick!

This was such a cute YA Christmas romance! I honestly wasn‘t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.

First off, I loved the premise. 10 blind dates picked by family members is a hilarious idea. The execution was great as well. There were some cute dates and some OMG dates (like the one that her twin cousins set up).

So...I'm not generally a fan of contemporaries without some diversity which made me a little...nervous for this...BUT that goes out the window in December when I turn into a basic bitch and mass consume Netflix holiday films. This was an excellent time for me to read this. It's very romance and family relationship leaning but not to a nauseating degree. I liked Sophie and her family overall. The concept was fun and pretty well executed.

Cheesy, corny, and cute, but I expected the story to have more of an emotional punch. It was a tad superficial and boring in parts. At points it was hard to keep up with the array of characters. I enjoyed the writing and concept so I'm generously giving it 3 stars.
