Bad Haircut
Bad Haircut: Stories from the Seventies | Tom Perrotta
10 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
New York Times bestselling author Tom Perrotta's first book is "more powerful than any coming-of-age novel" The Washington Post Bad Haircut explores the themes that have fascinated Perrotta throughout his career: suburban rituals and mores; sports and religion; the cheerful cheesiness of American consumer life; public tests of manliness; and the moral dilemmas faced by ordinary people, parents, and teenagers alike. Perrotta has continued to explore these subjects in novels from Election to The Abstinence Teacher. The ten rich stories here are linked by a single protagonist: Buddy, an adolescent suburban New Jersey boy who is truly seeing his world for the first time and already finding it both mysterious and lacking. Whether he's out on a Boy Scout trip with his mother and discovering that his mother actually knowsand has a history withthe man inside the battered foam hot dog costume in "The Weiner Man", feeling the first glimmer that sex might actually be possible for him in "Thirteen", or finding himself swept along on a prank gone very wrong in "Snowman," Buddy is both a recognizable American boy and a trademark Perrotta hero. Bad Haircut is a moving, spare book from a writer who, even this early in his career, had an assured sense of the complexity of his characters' emotional landscapes.

I got roped into driving my mom to get her hair done. At least this gives me a couple hours of uninterrupted reading time.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Best reading time ever! I‘m sitting in the same place while my friend is having here‘s colored, except I‘m playing on Litsy. 👍 6y
minkyb Had mine done today. Uninterrupted 90 minutes! ❣️ 6y

LauraBrook Wow! It looks great! As someone who cut off bunch of hair recently, are you still reaching to move your hair out of the way and it's not there? I kept putting it into a ponytail, and there was always a moment of "oh my god where did my hair go DID SOMEONE CUT IT OFF?!?" and then I remember. ? 7y
saguarosally @LauraBrook I've done this before and then I did, but I've only done it once this time. I have tried to use way too much shampoo though. 7y

I didn't get a bad haircut, per se, but it did entail an hour in the chair with a stylist who was so. Very. Slow. I said nothing because she was wielding scissors. I wish I'd brought a book! #icanteven #patience

LauraBeth Looks great 😀 7y
sprainedbrain It looks nice, though! 7y

So today I woke up on the crazy side of the bed and thought I could cut my boys' hair. Boy 1 was decent and I should've stopped while I was ahead. Nooo. I had to do boy 2. I didn't intend to shave his head but there was no saving it. I feel so bad. I can't even. I'm going to buy LOTS of beanies. 😱😔😥

Books_Wine_Repeat @merelybookish Very true! 🙃 @LeahBergen Thank you! @Seekingtardis He's blissfully unaware of the lack of hair. I was the one freaking out. Thank you. I'm trying to stop staring at his shaved little head. Sympathy and laughs. 😉 8y
SaraFair Have messed up both of my sons' hair many times. It grows fast. And shaved looks better than the "monk" hairdo my husband did once when he was correcting one of my messups. 8y
britt_brooke With a face that cute, who needs hair??! 💙 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @SaraFair My son was rocking the monk look for a second then I thought better of it. 😆😆 My husband came home and said the power has gone to my head. Haha. 8y

Interesting and enjoyable stories of the 70s. I like his writing style and will read him again!

Yournewfriendsams Love Perrotta! Enjoy 😄 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Yournewfriendsams Thank you!! I specifically loved "forgiveness". It made me buy Jim Croce's greatest hits...lol 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Somewhere in the author's introduction, he mentions" Dazed and Confused", which I saw because of this book. Books are continuously impacting my life, and I agree with the author, "The Wonder Years" was so much more 50s than 70s. "Dazed and Confused" I could have lived without, however, I'm glad it exists. Lol 8y
