The Impersonator
The Impersonator: A Mystery | Mary Miley
16 posts | 4 read | 21 to read
In 1917, Jessie Carr, fourteen years old and sole heiress to her family's vast fortune, disappeared without a trace. Now, years later, her uncle Oliver Beckett thinks he's found her: a young actress in a vaudeville playhouse is a dead ringer for his missing niece. But when Oliver confronts the girl, he learns he's wrong. Orphaned young, Leah Randall has been acting since she was a toddler. Oliver, never one to miss an opportunity, makes a proposition--with his coaching, Leah can impersonate Jessie, claim the fortune, and split it with him. The role of a lifetime, he says. A one-way ticket to Sing Sing, she hears. But when she's let go from her job, Oliver's offer looks a lot more appealing. Leah agrees to the con, but secretly promises herself to try and find out what happened to the real Jessie. There's only one problem: Leah's act won't fool the one person who knows the truth about Jessie's disappearance. Set against a Prohibition-era backdrop of speakeasies and vaudeville houses, Mary Miley's Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Competition winner The Impersonator will delight readers with its elaborate mystery and lively prose.

This is a mystery that was so good but not violent. I found myself suspecting everyone and involving myself WAY too much.

A vaudevillian actress is offered the role of a lifetime - impersonate an heiress who vanished years ago, and she (and the heiress‘ uncle) will receive a fortune. But, what happens when Leah, the actress, gets a little too close to the heiress‘ disappearance? This is the first in a mystery series. I haven‘t read this yet, though I have met the author, and she‘s fabulous! #LuckyStar #Movember

Here are my #novemberstats. All in all, a very enjoyable (and eclectic) book month.
The Best - The Impersonator
The one I liked least - The Lying Game
Most confusing - I'm sure can guess which one.
I just came from my library #IRL book club tonight. We were discussing the tagged book. I really liked this book and I will continue with the series. The writing put me right there in the 1920s. I enjoyed it a lot and loved the fun twist at the end.

I took the day off of work to decompress from the holiday (people). This rainy afternoon it was a book, a mocha, and a stroopwaffle. Then I watched UP.
Heaven. #introvert #coffeeandabook

I'm sooo over work right now.
Next up is this book for my #IFL book club next week. I went to an author's tea in Mechanicsburg, PA a couple of years ago and met Mary Miley. She was really nice and very knowledgeable about the 1920s. I'm excited to finally read this one.

It‘s the Roaring Twenties in the US, and vaudeville actress Leah is asked to portray a niece to gain a family fortune. The catch? The niece disappeared years ago, and soon Leah finds that someone isn‘t happy with this deception, the person who knows what happened to the niece long ago.

I heard the author speak years ago and bought the book...need to read this soon! #LipstickLies #SeptemberDanes

I liked this funny quote from this #historicalmystery set in the 1920s.

It was a good week at the #library! I also found this #historicalmystery set in the #1920s. It begins in the world of vaudeville when a woman gets an offer to impersonate a missing heiress. Drawn into the world of the missing girl, she determines to find out what happened to her. #Cozymystery #cozy #mystery #historicalmystery

JazzFeathers I read the third intalment in this series. Enjoyable enough, clever mystery, but l find the author gives in too often to the modern attitude that gives historical characters too much of a modern sensitivity 8y
SaraRosett @JazzFeathers I find that is often the case with historical fiction. I think it may partly be due to authors not wanting to seem to agree with out-dated attitudes. I'll still give the next books a try. :) 8y
JazzFeathers @SaraRosett mhm. If they don't know how to handle authenticity for the modern reader, then maybe they should try a diffetent genre 😉 8y
SaraRosett @JazzFeathers I agree, political correctness shouldn't be a feature of a historical fiction book. :) (edited) 8y

Great Fun! This clever mystery has all the elements of a ripping good story - lost heiress, a greedy uncle, sinister cousins, and a spunky, likable heroine. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's work, The Impersonator is a rollicking good read and apparently first in a series. I have a fondness for Old Hollywood mysteries, and I have a feeling that's where Jessie/Leah might be headed. Can't wait to find out!
