Oil and Marble
Oil and Marble: A Novel of Leonardo and Michelangelo | Stephanie Storey
19 posts | 19 read | 30 to read
From 15011505, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti both lived and worked in Florence. Leonardo was a charming, handsome fifty year-old at the peak of his career. Michelangelo was a temperamental sculptor in his mid-twenties, desperate to make a name for himself. Michelangelo is a virtual unknown when he returns to Florence and wins the commission to carve what will become one of the most famous sculptures of all time: David. Even though his impoverished family shuns him for being an artist, he is desperate to support them. Living at the foot of his misshapen block of marble, Michelangelo struggles until the stone finally begins to speak. Working against an impossible deadline, he begins his feverish carving. Meanwhile, Leonardos life is falling apart: he loses the hoped-for David commission; he cant seem to finish any project; he is obsessed with his ungainly flying machine; he almost dies in war; his engineering designs disastrously fail; and he is haunted by a woman he has seen in the marketa merchants wife, whom he is finally commissioned to paint. Her name is Lisa, and she becomes his muse. Leonardo despises Michelangelo for his youth and lack of sophistication. Michelangelo both loathes and worships Leonardos genius. Oil and Marble is the story of their nearly forgotten rivalry. Storey brings early 16th-century Florence alive, and has entered with extraordinary empathy into the minds and souls of two Renaissance masters. The book is an art history thriller. An incredible novel from Stephanie Storey. When I started this novel, I didn‘t know what to expect. By the time I was through with it, I had fallen in love with Renaissance art. The novel was kinetic, captivating, witty and imaginative. Highly recommended! 🙌

My book club gave this one a pick when we met last night. I know there‘s little (possibly very little) historical accuracy in this story, but I enjoyed how the author imagined the relationship between da Vinci and Michelangelo and the creation of their most famous works of art.

Crazeedi I've had the in my tbr for quite some time! 5y

For fans of historical fiction, and of art... This one isn‘t dry, boring, or overwrought. It‘s fun and engaging, with “characters” that bring the story to vibrant life. It has me planning a trip to Florence!

This was a surprisingly fun look at the supposed rivalry between Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. As it is historical fiction the author obviously had to use artistic license to create many of the scenes and conversations. The novel takes place as Leonardo is painting the Mona Lisa and Michelangelo is creating the statue of David. There are so many fascinating facts scattered throughout that gave me new appreciation for these works of art.

Ncostell @rohit-sawant, @Bookish_B It was a great look into the lives of the artists as well as the life and politics of 1500s Florence but still a fast, fun read. 6y

The author brings you into Florence through descriptive settings, familiar masterpieces of art and superb characterization. As Michelangelo and Leonardo compete for the attention of the elite in Florence, then history, families, and settings all spin around to create intrigue and drama around the competition. Could not put the book down. Delightful read!

A rivalry of geniuses. Oil & Marble gives us a tale of the creation of Leonardo's Mona Lisa and Michelangelo's David during the Renaissance, and the creative competition between them that drove each to amazing artistic heights. This was well paced, well depicted, and gave us portraits of these great men as men, foibles and all. My first five-star read of the year, this was just a good read and one I'd truly recommend.

Leonardo and Michelangelo in Florence over a four year time span (1501-1505), their rivalry, the painting of the Mona Lisa, and the carving of David. Genius artists that were rivals yet seemed to inspire each other. Loved this book ❤🎨❤🎨

The author uses the fierce rivalry between Da Vinci and Michelangelo to tell the story of the creation of the Mona Lisa and the statue of David. The the tension builds as chapters alternate between the two artists. The reader is rewarded with a deeper understanding of the times, an appreciation of the creative process and the passion of the masters. I spent hours doing follow up reading on the Internet.

Literary art fiction, The period of rivalry between Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Stephanie spent years researching her work. Would not have chosen this audiobook but the author requested a review and yes, it was hard going at times but I enjoyed it. I would have preferred the American narrator just hadn't bothered with the Italian accents, all the characters were Italian so it did get a tad tedious. It's a pick if you love the genre.

MrBook Ohhhh, this is right up my alley! Thank you so much for sharing! @BookBabe , I'm guessing you'll be TBRing this as well. 8y
audiothing No worries @MrBook, I do think though that I would have preferred the book, the narration did distract me a little 8y
