The Book of Trespass
The Book of Trespass: Climbing the Fences That Divide England | Nick Hayes
9 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
'There is no one like Nick Hayes at world today, fusing as he does a dazzling artistic ability with a radical political sensibility, and a unique worldview' Robert MacfarlaneA meditation on the fraught and complex relationship between land, politics and power, this is England through the eyes of a trespasser. The vast majority of our country is entirely unknown to us because we are banned from setting foot on it. By law of trespass, we are excluded from 92 per cent of the land and 97 per cent of its waterways, blocked by walls whose legitimacy is rarely questioned. But behind them lies a story of enclosure, exploitation and dispossession of public rights whose effects last to this day.The Book of Trespass takes us on a journey over the walls of England, into the thousands of square miles of rivers, woodland, lakes and meadows that are blocked from public access. By trespassing the land of the media magnates, Lords, politicians and private corporations that own England, Nick Hayes argues that the root of social inequality is the uneven distribution of land.Weaving together the stories of poachers, vagabonds, gypsies, witches, hippies, ravers, ramblers, migrants and protestors, and charting acts of civil disobedience that challenge orthodox power at its heart, The Book of Trespass will transform the way you see England.

I've joined a new book group... my 5th... it's held at Toppings in Bath and has an eco focus. It's on a Monday night and fits perfectly with my lecture at uni.

Yesterday the High Court banned the right to wild camp on Dartmoor, favouring the landowner. Support #therighttoroam learn about the damage private land ownership has brought to our countryside. We need to fight back for our right to roam.

Absolutely mind blown by the content in this amazing book. I immediately want to go back and read it again. It is now in the top 10 of my all time favourite non-fiction books. Contender for read of the year for me.
It's endlessly fascinating and addictive. I am very much on the same page as Nick Hayes.

AllDebooks So many connections to further reading such as the links from slave trading & East India Company providing extreme fortunes for new businessmen to their building of vast sealed estates, removing common land from useage by all; witches at Belvoir castle, Sheffield illegal tree felling, protests, Greenham Common. 2y
