Eight years ago, Addie Webster was the victim of the most notorious kidnapping of the decade. Addie vanished-and her high-profile parents were forced to move on.Mark Webster is now president of the United States, fighting to keep the oval office after a tumultuous first term. Then the unthinkable happens: the president's daughter resurfaces. Addie is brought back into her family's fold, but who is this sixteen-year-old girl with a quiet, burning intelligence now living in the White House? There are those in the president's political circle who find her timely return suspicious. When a national security advisor approaches Darrow Fergusson, Addie's childhood best friend and the son of the president's chief of staff, he doesn't know what to think. How could the girl he's missed for all these years be a threat to national security? Still, at the risk of having his own secrets exposed, Darrow agrees to spy on Addie. He soon realizes that his old friend is much more than the traumatized victim of a sick political fringe group. Addie has come home with a mission...but will she choose to complete it?

Reads like a book whose premise may have been heavily workshopped. Opening chapters were promising. Then the whole story gets muddled with cheesy dialogue and ridiculous plot points. I finished the book just moments ago and I can‘t summarize the resolution because I don‘t care. I‘m actually a bit mad at myself for finishing this one. I should have moved on many hours ago.

Starting this one today in audiobook format. #litsybythenumbers #lbtn #lbtn0 #litsybythenumbers0 #lbtnzero #zero #0

Kristy_K I‘ve had this book since it was published and still haven‘t read it! Interested in seeing what you think. 6y
Chelleo @Kristy_K ... I‘m only an hour into the audiobook but so far: I‘m surprised at the diversity of the characters. The main female character is mixed and her best friend is black. I‘m also giving the main female character the side-eye because something is up with her and I‘m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Nicely paced and the narrator is doing a good job. (edited) 6y
Chelleo @Kristy_K ... just finished this. Good read. Just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. Be warned. It has a cliffhanger ending with what seems to be a promise of a follow up book. (edited) 6y
Kristy_K @Chelleo Sounds right up my alley! I didn‘t realize it was a part of a series though. 6y
Chelleo @Kristy_K ... According to the author‘s response a question posted on Goodreads, it was written as a standalone with the potential for more books. 6y

I celebrated by bribing students to join #battleofthebooks with snacks and chocolate milk! The best is that our mom texted @Kimberlone and I this morning to wish us a happy #nationalreadabookday

An excellent YA suspense thriller. I thought this book was well written and very relevant to today's political and technological world we live in. As a middle school librarian I am excited to recommend this book to my students and look forward to some engaging conversations about the book.

#bookishresolutions This lap quilt is a favorite; won it in a raffle. #readjanuary

Reviewsbylola My Netgalley % is so low because I requested a ton of books years ago and can't even access them now. 7y
Suzze Mine is 78%, but only because I get most of the books I never get around to from Edelweiss. I've never noticed any % there. 7y

From that day on, Darrow kept a red checker in his pocket. A chipped plastic talisman pressing against his leg, rough and cool beneath his fingers. Even as he got older, he carried the thing, endlessly clinging to a child's hope that someday-maybe someday, if he was good enough, strong enough, honorable enough-he'd get a do-over.

Mehso-so

I love YA with a political slant, and while this definitely had that, it felt too formulaic and it was hard to connect or empathize with the main character. Despite the cliffhanger ending, I don't think I'd read the next book (if there is one).
