An adventerous South American Tomb Raider! This hotly anticipated companion to Woven in Moonlight follows an outcast Condesa, as she braves the jungle to forge an alliance with the lost city of gold. If the jungle wants you, it will have you... Catalina Quiroga is a Condesa without a country. She’s lost the Inkasisa throne, the loyalty of her people, and her best friend. Banished to the perilous Yanu Jungle, Catalina knows her chances of survival are slim, but that won’t stop her from trying to escape. Her duty is to rule. While running for her life, Catalina is rescued by Manuel, the son of her former general who has spent years searching for allies. With his help, Catalina could find the city of gold that’s home to the fierce Illari people and strike a deal with them for an army to retake her throne. But the elusive Illari are fighting a battle of their own—a mysterious blight is corrupting the jungle, laying waste to everything they hold dear. As a seer, Catalina should be able to help, but her ability to read the future in the stars is as feeble as her survival instincts. While searching for the Illari, Catalina must reckon with her duty and her heart to find her true calling, which is key to stopping the corruption before it destroys the jungle completely.

I enjoyed this one, I'm not sure why the rating is so low. The jungle setting was fantastic, I just missed some of the magic from the first book.

The sequel to Woven in Moonlight, this one should definitely not be read until you've read Moonlight, as it picks up immediately at the conclusion of that book. Overall I did enjoy this one, even though the MC seemed a bit thick at times - she was so obsessed with her goal that she couldn't see any other way forward, which I get was part of her character development but still. This one also felt a little scattered with the journey through the ⬇ï¸

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) jungle taking the majority of the book - & then suddenly switching to the whole “something evil is killing the jungle!“ thing without a lot of warning. But if you enjoyed the first book, you'll like this one as well.

My only real complaint is that the author frequently uses Spanish words but provides no glossary & also seems to have no rhyme or reason for when she inserts Spanish words instead of English. I had to keep setting the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the book down, find my phone, look up a word, because I like to know what it means! - & it really took me out of the flow. A glossary would have been helpful.

But overall an enjoyable tale with a gorgeous cover - & I'll be on the lookout for more by this author. While this book wrapped up the loose threads, there was a hint of what could happen if a third book is forthcoming.

I don't mind when authors use non-English words in their stories to help make things more authentic, but a glossary would be super nice, especially when there aren't a lot of contextual clues. And places like here - why use the English word for lemon, but then the Spanish word for orange? For me, it interrupts the flow when I am stopping to look up words all the time.

DivineDiana Good point! 4y
MartinaLove I love when there's a glossary. 4y
Lindy @MartinaLove I'm a fan of glossaries too. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm so glad that our phones make translation much easier but it can take you out of the story if it happens often. Sometimes I look things up, sometimes I just let it roll if it doesn't seem important to the overall story. I do get excited when I know or infer the meaning, though. 4y

#BookReport - Slow reading week this week. Love At First was okay. Kitty's Class Day was probably my least-favorite Alcott book I've ever read - I don't think she lends herself to short stories very well, and the alternate title of “Proverb Stories“ gives you an idea of the fact that these were very moralizing little tales. Got carried away & finished The Horse & His Boy instead of sticking with chapter-a-day. Almost done with Goblet of Fire & ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Led Zeppelin. LZ is interesting but slow reading. Started Russian Magic Tales & am quite enjoying it. I love the rhythm & the way different lines are repeated - for instance, instead of “once upon a time“ many of the stories start with “In a certain land, in a certain tsardom, lived...“ I'm also a huge fan of the oft-repeated saying, “Mornings are wiser than evenings.“ I've divided this one to last me the whole month for #FoodandLit. ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Started Written in Starlight last night. It's the sequel to Woven in Moonlight & I'm interested to see how things play out for this character even though she's VERY ANNOYING. The husband & I are off work this week but I'm not sure yet if that will mean more or less reading. 😂 @Cinfhen 4y

Mehso-so

I was excited about this as I had enjoyed Ibanez‘s Woven in Moonlight. However, this story focuses on the outcast Condesa, Catalina, and her adventures in the forest and her search for allies to get her throne back from Ximena. The descriptions of the forest are gorgeous and the live story between Catalina and Manuel, son of the former General, is cute and all right. Catalina does grow as an individual but I found her irritating.

Come-read-with-me The cover is beautiful! 💕 4y

Cozy morning view on this dreary day... I post a lot less pictures because most ARCs I read are in e-format due to COVID.

Prairiegirl_reading Dog photos are good too! 😄 4y
