I was fortunate enough to have met Laurie many years ago. Speaking with her was refreshing and engaging. She gifted my daughter several of her books signed & personalized. She was amazing.
Somehow, I never picked this one up. I‘m so glad I remedied that. This book is excellent. I can‘t wait to get home & discuss it with my daughter. (She reread it after finding out I hadn‘t read it)

Librarybelle What a great story! And, this is a remarkable book! 3d
britt_brooke Excellent book!! I loved the graphic novel adaptation too. 3d

Cinfhen What a wonderful gift and so nice to read along with your daughter 💕💕 3d
Tamra Somehow I‘ve never managed to get to this one - must remedy! I‘ll pass it along to my daughter when she‘s ready. 3d
Read4life @britt_brooke I‘ll have to check out the graphic novel. Thanks. 2d
dabbe Oh how I loved teaching this book to freshmen. The movie is excellent, too ... starring a very young Kristen Stewart. 🤗 2d
Read4life @dabbe Thanks for the info. My daughter and I will have to watch the movie together. 2d

We Are Not Like Them | Christine Pride

Two friends, one black one white, explore the complexities of their friendship and social injustice after a black boy was killed by the police. Written by a black and a white author I was very interested in how they would tackle these subjects. The result fell short to me, to be honest. The book checked off all the points of a “how not to be racist” list but it lacked depth and authenticity. Their friendship felt a bit unreal and immature. ⬇️

BarbaraBB Yet I enjoyed reading the different perspectives and Kevin‘s letter in the end. Thanks for sending me this book Cindy 💕 3d
squirrelbrain I gave this a pick but I agree that there were some issues with it. 3d

Cinfhen I think I gave it a pick too @squirrelbrain but I think you‘re right, B. This book lacked some depth. Glad you picked it up, though. GD, remember when I was able to send you books no problem 😉 3d
Tamra Shoot, the premise is a good one to explore! I wish it had worked better. 3d
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Those were the days 😉 but I still have hope for the current one 🤞🏽🤞🏽 3d
Librarybelle That‘s a shame! 3d

Heffington writes an easily accessible look at tbt history of women who, for a variety of reasons, do not have children. She looks at society‘s view of women who follow this path and really dives into the reasons - whether it‘s reproductive rights or political or even climate related.

As a woman who does not have children, I found myself nodding along to the perceptions from society. This was so good, and it made me feel like I am not alone…

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick You're not alone! I am also child-free by choice. A large part is that I know I have very little patience, even for my nieces. 4d

Cinfhen This does sound fascinating and interesting! My daughter & SIL have stated many times they don‘t think they want children and while that makes me sad, I can respect their decision. 4d
jenniferw88 Definitely NOT alone! Mine is due to health reasons - it's extremely unlikely I'll be able to have them as I don't produce enough of any hormone (I'm on a pill to control my stress hormone level, for example). 4d
JuniperWilde As stated above - you are not alone. It‘s good to have books to jumpstart the conversation. ♥️ 4d
Librarybelle I definitely make sure my fur babies get all of my love and treat them like my kids! 😂 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Cinfhen @jenniferw88 @JuniperWilde Things would be different if I had a significant other, but I don‘t, so c‘est la vie. Thanks for listening! 4d
Meshell1313 Yes! Child free by choice! I‘ve read many similar books but added this one! Sounds great. If you‘re interested check out (edited) 3d
Librarybelle @Meshell1313 Thanks for the recommendation! 3d

This book did not work for me. I know that with Oyeyemi, you just have to let the writing wash over you, and there will be times you have no idea what is "happening" in the plot. This novel was true to form in that regard. I found the use of Shakespearen and Mythical names heavy-handed. I still enjoy her writing, but this novel was a miss. 2 ?

This book is waaaayyy too long. And the author is so smug. Yes he is a famous lawyer and this is a famous and in itself super interesting true crime case but man, was it annoying. I wish it was 300 pages less and written by an objective author.

Cinfhen This book has been on my TBR list since @emilyhaldi first posted about it years ago but the length always puts me off!!! Miss you, ‘Em!!!!! 1w
squirrelbrain Won‘t be reading that, then! 🤣 1w

dabbe @squirrelbrain #ditto! 🤣🤣🤣 1w
Librarybelle Definitely not adding this one to my tbr! 1w
Kristy_K I agree about his smugness! I enjoyed Helter Skelter by him, but the rest of his books he comes across very conceited. 1w
BarbaraBB @Kristy_K I‘m glad you know what I mean! 1w
Megabooks Yea! I thought he was so smug in the Manson case one! Good observation 👍🏻👍🏻 7d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks In that one too? It‘s annoying and I am glad that I‘m not imagining it! 7d
Suet624 Smug indeed. 5d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 You think so too? I feel kinda relieved! 4d
Suet624 It seemed he just couldn‘t help himself. 😂 4d

I don‘t think I ever rated a #Persephone a so-so before, but this one just brought a bit too little.

It‘s a sweet enough story (a spinster falls overboard a cruise ship, strands on a desert island, is saved four years later and returns to England in the midst of WWII) but it just fell a bit flat.

squirrelbrain That‘s a shame! It‘s not often that a Persephone falls a bit flat. 2w

What a surprising delight. The third of the Harold Fry series. I have not read the second book in the trilogy but want to pick it up now. A hopeful book about forgiveness at any age. Just loved it. 4.5 🌟 #52bookclub23 #contemporary @LauraReads @KarenUK @britt_brooke @CarolynM @Smarkies @LeeRHarry @Clwojick @BookBelle84 @jennifer80 @Librarybelle @triplem80 @AshleyHoss820 @Read4life @Bluebird @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @ravenlee

jlhammar Glad you enjoyed! I thought it was so well done. The second book is wonderful (I actually preferred it to the first). 2w
rmaclean4 @jlhammar I am excited to pick it up. I thought Maureen was stronger than the first book also. 2w

Finally got to finish this this morning. It was nice to sit around in my PJs in the quiet house, drink my coffee, and finish a book. Most of this I did ‘listen‘ to, and man does Julia Whalen do a phenomenal job at narration. But I got the book in a swap, so it was nice to alternate. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the world we all love so much: books/audiobooks. The romance was nice too. The ending a little cliche, but not enough to dislike.

Retired police detective Tom Kettle is visited by officers investigating one of his unsolved cases, stirring up memories, both sweet & painful. It took me a while to get into the book, the narrative is very much in Tom‘s mind which wanders & occasionally hallucinates, making it difficult to get a grip on the story, but gradually it unfolds in all its horror & tragedy. It made me cry. It‘s a tough but worthwhile read. #52BookClub23 #SetinDublin

LeeRHarry I don‘t have set in Dublin as one of my prompts …mmmm now I‘m confused…🤔 best check out which one I made up 😆 2w

CarolynM @Cathythoughts It‘s good, I think, hope you like it. The weather has been all over the place for the last few weeks - wet and cold (by our standards) one day, pleasant and sunny the next. Today was a cold one, but they‘re forecasting 20 degrees for the next 2 days 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
CarolynM @TrishB I think you‘d need a very hard heart to read this story without tears 2w
CarolynM @Librarybelle Thank you 🙏 2w
