Waiting for the Night Song
Waiting for the Night Song | Julie Carrick Dalton

A startling and timely debut, Julie Carrick Dalton's Waiting for the Night Song is a moving, brilliant novel about friendships forged in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets that leave you forever changed. Cadie Kessler has spent decades trying to cover up one truth. One moment. But deep down, didnt she always know her secret would surface? An urgent message from her long-estranged best friend Daniela Garcia brings Cadie, now a forestry researcher, back to her childhood home. There, Cadie and Daniela are forced to face a dark secret that ended both their idyllic childhood bond and the magical summer that takes up more space in Cadies memory then all her other years combined. Now grown up, bound by long-held oaths, and faced with truths she does not wish to see, Cadie must decide what she is willing to sacrifice to protect the people and the forest she loves, as drought, foreclosures, and wildfire spark tensions between displaced migrant farm workers and locals. Waiting for the Night Song is a love song to the natural beauty around us, a call to fight for what we believe in, and a reminder that the truth will always rise. This asks: Can one moment define a person's whole life? It reminded me a bit of Crawdads, dealing heavily with the environment of the setting. Told from Cadie's pov, alternating between her childhood past and the present. Cadie Kessler, an entomologist and forestry scientist, returns to her hometown when her deepest childhood secret surfaces. The author continually tries to mislead the reader and doesn't do it well and the outcome is predictable.

Starting this one because a friend raved about it.

DebbieGrillo I'm reading this now for the same reason. How did you like it? 3y
BookNAround @DebbieGrillo I enjoyed it but it hasn‘t stuck with me all that well. 3y

This one is incredibly similar to Where the Crawdads Sing, but the plot becomes convoluted w/too many issues. There‘s a murder, immigration policy, climate change, coming-of-age, & more. The story got lost in the heavy-handed issues & sermonizing. I found myself rolling my eyes & probably should have DNFed, but I kept waiting for it to find its footing & move past its talking points. I saw the “twist” coming a mile away & that didn‘t help either.

This story is about people hurting each other because of their legality and being there for each other when they are needed most. About friendships that are sacred and deep yet also surrounded by a few lies. Lies to protect and lies that could and do hurt. Lies that are meant to protect. Friendships will be put to the ultimate test. This is a very touching and heartfelt story.

So I don't have enough time to give this book before it is due back to the library. I've returned it and will maybe pick it up in the future.

I say maybe because at this time I didn't want to read a book with the plot of "something that happened one summer is back to haunt her and expose secrets". I want something "fresher" and different right now. (Don't know what that is though!)

No matter what or where, a bookworm always brings a book. Sitting in emerg on Superbowl Sunday after slicing my finger almost clean off washing a beer mug. 🙄

Waiting and waiting gives me the chance to read right? Optimism? Listening in to everything has been entertaining? One girl had to get staples in her head - tobaganning accident from slamming into a fence.

AsYouWish Ummm.... ouch!!!! This is a very stupid question, but are you okay??? At least you have a book to keep you company, hopefully it is a good book!!! 4y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @AsYouWish I'm good. Just getting impatient. I realize stitches are a low priority but get me out of here! 4y

Pickpick

A forester with a secret from her childhood— which can‘t help but catch up with her. Cadie spend her youth running around in the woods with her friend Daniela, but after witnessing something terrible, everything in their lives changed.

I loved the environmental themes in this book and the last fifty pages begged me to read straight through. An interesting debut!

I had not heard of this book, which is due for publication in January, until it was offered up on BookishFirst. I had no idea that I needed it in my life until I read the haunting, lyrical opening on the website. I then exchanged 2000 hard earned points to make it a part of my life!

By the way, BookishFirst is a great source for ARCs! If you sign up because of this post, please use my referral code: d9c86cb41f080f1fc www.bookishfirst.com

Lsmoore43 I'm looking forward to reading this one. I got a copy from NetGalley. I also love BookishFirst. Great sight. 4y
