The Sweet Taste of Muscadines
The Sweet Taste of Muscadines: A Novel | Pamela Terry
15 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
In this intimate debut novel, a woman returns to her small Southern hometown in the wake of her mother's sudden death--only to find the past upended by stunning family secrets. Lila Bruce Breedlove never quite felt at home in Wesleyan, Georgia, especially after her father's untimely death when she was a child. Both she and her brother, Henry, fled north after high school, establishing fulfilling lives and relationships of their own, steeped in art and culture. In contrast, their younger sister, Abigail, opted to remain in Georgia to dote on their domineering, larger-than-life mother, Geneva. Yet, despite their years-long independence, Lila and Henry both know they've never quite reckoned with their upbringing. Now, when their elderly mother dies suddenly and strangely, found among the dense vines of the muscadine arbor behind the family estate, they must travel back to the town that raised them. But as Lila and Henry uncover more about Geneva's death, shocking truths are revealed that upend the Bruces' history as they know it, sending the pair on an extraordinary journey to chase a truth that will dramatically alter the course of their lives. With deep compassion and sharp wit, Pamela Terry brings to life the culture and expectations of a small Southern town that values appearance over authenticity--and where the struggle to live honestly can lead to devastating consequences.

#12booksof2021 #February

This is my top read for February.

From a debut author, it‘s a story about family…its messiness and how one is shaped by it. Lots of emotions and SO beautifully written.

Andrew65 Looks good. 2y
Crazeedi Is it a YA ? Or not? It looks like my kind of book, and beautiful cover! 2y
robinb @Crazeedi No, it‘s not a YA, but the adults do have some backstories from their growing up years. It‘s set in GA. I think you would enjoy it, Diane. 😊 2y
Crazeedi @robinb oh that's fine! Sounds like a good one , thanks for the recommendation 2y

@Gissy once more you have sent me an incredible gift❤️❤️❤️ I love everything. I will do a seperate post for the print. This picnic theme was perfect in every way. Now if only yours would arrive 😢. #sliceofsummerswap

Catsandbooks Such a cute bag! Enjoy! 🍉 💕 3y
Gissy I was so nervous because I wanted all the items to coordinate which was like a hunting process around the stores. Then I tried to coordinate the colors you like and practical items that you could use for a real picnic. I‘m glad you liked it.

The box will arrive at some point. That happened with the past swap. I have a couple of packages that the message says @ moving to the next facility” which means my home😳

Gissy In terms of books you said you like fantasy and HF so included 2 of each genre and one that is more related with summer. 3y

Chrissyreadit @Gissy yes- The books were also perfect!!! I love picnics, camping and being outside. I almost bought a new picnic blanket- and am so glad I did not because yours is exactly right!!! And your tote bag choice screams Summer- I love it so much. Of course now I want to go on a picnic this weekend, but I can even go into my backyard and it would be fun! The picture is under the cigar tree in my yard and I love how perfect that space is to picnic in to 3y
Gissy @Chrissyreadit Yes! It looks perfect! Just post a photo if you do a picnic in your backyard. 🤗 3y

I listened to the audiobook of this one. The minute Xe Sands started talking I deflated. She‘s one of my least favorite narrators. I know this is the unpopular opinion, but I thought this book was incredibly boring. I did a lot of fast forwarding towards the end...I just wanted it to be over.

The descriptive language in this book was so captivating. Terry's ability to set a scene by precisely choosing each word is undeniable. However, I can understand how some people find this type of language to be too much.

Lila finds herself forced to return home to Georgia after her sister calls to inform her their mother has died. Her quest for answers leads to more questions & asks how foundation & family influence identity. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Stellar debut!

FULL REVIEW 3/16

Why would Geneva be out in the muscadine grove with a spoon in her hand when they found her.  What even possessed her to go there in the night?

Geneva‘s three grown children were puzzled about why.

If you grew up in the South or have visited Scotland, you will love this entertaining book that has life-changing, heartbreaking secrets revealed after many years. 5/5

This debut family novel is simply wonderful and has me happily anticipating further books from this author. I won‘t say a lot about the plot as I don‘t want to get into spoiler territory, but it is about family, its messiness and how we are shaped by it. It has some surprise twists, some heartrending moments and much to say about time/place/period and how those relate to one‘s sense of self and finding one‘s true home. Anger, loss, humor, and 🔻

robinb forgiveness all play a part here as well. The settings are varied (Maine, Georgia and Scotland), and while being a lifelong southerner myself, I didn‘t necessarily see some things as the protagonist does, I can appreciate and derive humor from her viewpoint. My very favorite thing about the book is the beautiful, poignant writing. It flows, it evokes time and setting effortlessly, and it is simply a pleasure to get lost in. Highly recommend. 5/5⭐️ 3y
