Bronte Sisters: The Brief Lives of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne
Bronte Sisters: The Brief Lives of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne | Catherine Reef
11 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
The Bronte sisters are among the most beloved writers of all time, best known for their classic nineteenth-century novels "Jane Eyre" (Charlotte), "Wuthering Heights" (Emily), and "Agnes Grey" (Anne). In this sometimes heartbreaking young adult biography, Catherine Reef explores the turbulent lives of these literary siblings and the oppressive times in which they lived. Bronte fans will also revel in the insights into their favorite novels, the plethora of poetry, and the outstanding collection of more than sixty black-and-white archival images. A powerful testimony to the life of the mind. (Endnotes, bibliography, index.)"

#NewYearNewYou Day 22: Fats‘ review: “The language used was simple, with a slightly bigger font, but the story of the Brontë family is darker and more complicated than that. While I‘ve only read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, it was definitely fascinating to see how a writer‘s life heavily influenced his/her writing.” #SoulSisters Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-dfb

Eggs Great choice for the prompt 👏🏻 5y

Pickpick

I‘ve been fascinated by the Bronte sisters, after reading some of their novels. This book is a very readable biography of the sisters, told in clear prose and included some archived pictures. It captures pretty well the life and times of the Bronte family. However I find it not detailed enough to be deemed as a biography. I‘m not in favour of the author including a summary of each novel written by the sisters in here. It acts as a spoiler. 👇

erzascarletbookgasm ..(cont.) I guess this book serves as a good introduction or companion to younger readers who are not yet familiar with the Bronte‘s works. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6y
Sarah83 Maybe interesting for you @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads ? 😍😘 6y

Ha! Interesting oddity of literary history.

LeahBergen So weird! 😆 6y
merelybookish I don't know why but I kind of love that CB didn't like JA. 6y
Heideschrampf And it does make sense. JA would never have written a Rochester or a Heathcliff. JA is like Led Zeppelin, CB is more Nirvana. Both rock. 6y

So sad, I can't imagine losing my own three younger siblings like this 💔💔
(NB It's not every day you learn that the man who treated Anne Brontë in her last illness may have been a relative!)

batsy That final line is heartbreaking. 7y

Charlotte Brontë gently turns down the proposal of Henry Nussey and refuses to compromise her principles for the sake of an easy life

I visited Haworth for the first time yesterday (I lived within 12 miles for 25 years and now live 250 miles away!) and it was wonderful. Such a quintessential Northern English town with beautiful views and a great museum. I may have got carried away in the gift shop...

I-read-and-eat Museum gifshops are the best. I can never leave without getting something. 7y
batsy How wonderful! I think you showed remarkable restraint 😀 7y

kalinichta I visited Haworth with my now-ex Yorkshireman boyfriend. Such a sweet little place. But that steep road! Residents must have incredible leg muscles. 7y
