Day 5: #happiness

A few years ago, I realized I needed to adjust my view of happiness. Striving for a happy life can be incredibly fulfilling; but striving to be happy all the time is unrealistic.

I am grateful that I have been able to navigate through the difficult times and come out stronger, hope that I will continue to be able to do so, and consider my life filled with meaning and contentment. #gratitude30

kspenmoll So well stated. ❤️ 6y

My reading will probably be taking a different direction over the next few months! I‘m contemplating a return to work; but, as much as I used to love working in refugee resettlement, I am considering a career change into life coaching, with a focus on social change and working with social justice orgs and activists.

To this end, I have started a class on Positive Psychology, a branch that was just forming when I was a psych major! #bookmail

wtimblin Good for you. I love the positive psychology movement, tend to use a lot of techniques from this paradigm with veterans in my practice. Seems to work well. Good luck 6y

Depression is now 10 times as prevalent as it was in 1960, and it strikes at a much younger age. The mean age of a person‘s first episode 40 years ago was 29.5, while today it is 14.5 years. This is a paradox, since every objective indicator of well-being—purchasing power, education, availability of music, and nutrition—has been going north, while every indicator of subjective well-being has been going south. How is this epidemic to be explained?

tpixie I sometimes wonder if now we don't put more pressure to "be happy " than we used to. That we should expect it, and experience it often. As opposed to just working, getting through life - with not big peaks and valleys of emotions. I'm not certain this could explain clinical Depression, but maybe at least some mood disorders. Just a thought. 7y
Conservio I wonder if it is just diagnosed more. Also, how does this compare to the rise in population? 7y
Gezemice @Conservio I think it is diagnosed a lot more. My mother had "problems with her nerves". With my current knowledge, it was clear she was depressed, but I did not know what depression was. Also, until Prozac came along in the mid nineties, treatment options were rather drastic so only severe cases would have been diagnosed. And there was a stigma. If depression was on your medical record, you could not get jobs or health or life insurance. 7y
Eggs Over diagnosing is good for big pharma 7y
tlarocca I wonder how much being in a more globalized, information overloaded workd has to do with feeling helpless and depressed. When the news media agrandizes violence and strife that we as individuals have very little control over it can begin to feel as if we have little or no agency over our existence. Not to mention the environmental crisis and massive loss of species. Its a lot to take in. 7y

Authentic happiness derives from raising the bar for yourself, not rating yourself against others.
