(2021) Two very different women both arrive in NY on the same day, both escaping difficult relationships with damaged (and damaging) men. One of them is soon a victim of violence; the other finds the first's body on her morning run. The dead woman narrates as the survivor deals with trauma and the murder investigation. It's an exploration of living and dying with misogyny, and just enough thriller to keep you turning pages. I liked it well.

My #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin reads for February. Honestly, I have no recollection why I added Before You Knew My Name to my TBR or what it's about, but I gather it's some sort of thriller. Expectations of “The Covenant of the Crown“ are a little firmer: I don't know what or why, but I conjecture that the Enterprise crew will save the universe again or something like that.

I loved this book....it took a bit to get into it at first, but I was hooked by the 3rd chapter.
2 women run away to NYC, one ends ups murdered & the other discovers her body. What follows is such a creative twist on a familiar story, with characters you come to love.

Finished up this daunting read for book club with the author. Alice & Ruby are running away to NYC and from men that are bad for them. Alice ends up being murdered and Ruby finds her body. Not a lot happens other than that. Bublitz has great storytelling abilities but I feel like she couldn't get out of her own way on this one.

Told from the murder victim‘s POV, this book leads the reader through her past, the month before her death, and after her death. The character who finds her body is followed through her past and her present. It‘s set up like a murder mystery and it‘s the most charming book I‘ve read that covers trauma, abuse and murder.

It‘s happened. Turns out I read this book a year ago! At first it felt like a new read to me but as I went along it began to feel familiar. It wasn‘t until the end that I checked. 🤷🏻‍♀️. I would write the same review I wrote before. A page turner indeed. Please tell me there are others out there who forget books they have read. I know for book club I have to read close to the day we meet .

Bublitz‘s debut novel draws the reader in with its contemplative perspective that draws two women newly arrived to NYC looking for a fresh start. Alice turns 18 on the bus to the city, with cash and a stolen camera. 36-year-old Ruby hopes a belated gap year from her Melbourne life is just what she needs. Their stories intertwine only after death. The pacing may unfold a bit slowly but it‘s a compelling read and sure to start discussion!

I loved the different take that this book took to an all too familiar story. Instead of the emphasis on being about who committed the crime, it is all about the victim and the woman who found her. It was still a suspense, but also a wonderful commentary on the fear women face because of male predators, whether criminal or just immoral. making it of interest not only to suspense readers but also those interested in gender issues. I loved it. 4.5/5

This is very good. It's a mystery/thriller. The narrator is already dead. But she wants you to figure out what happened and tell you her story and the story of the woman that finds her. The cover is beautiful but I have no idea what it has to do with the story.

For a book about murder, this is actually a very sweet book.

This one was devastating. I listened to the audiobook and maybe the narrator's performance made it even more heart-wrenching but I feel so sad. It is very well written and tackles important topics. Oh Alice 😢 ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This novel has an unusual premise and narrative style. It‘s narrated by Alice Lee, who arrives in NYC on her 18th birthday and is murdered only weeks later. Ruby Jones, also recently arrived from Australia, finds her body and the two women become inextricably linked.

Obviously there‘s a lot of talk about death, but I still found this an enthralling listen. As the blurb claims - it‘s not a whodunit; it‘s more of a ‘who was she?‘

Wonderful sunny day here in Perth and I read this book in one day , something I haven‘t done for a very long time. This is her first book and it kept me reading . Very engaging. For me 10/10 . #joysbooks2021

As of today I am fully vaccinated. On the way home stopped at an op shop and found this book . Very happy.

A thought provoking tale about women and the perils they face during every day life.It‘s beautifully and evocatively written but not always easy to read. It took me a little while to get into it as it has quite a reflective feel but once I did, I found it very compelling.The lives of the girls are brilliantly entwined and interconnected and their individual stories are gripping in their own right. A powerful and very impressive debut. #Pigeonhole
