The Vanishing Witch | Karen Maitland

The Vanishing Witch by Karen Maitland, author of the hugely popular Company of Liars will thrill fans of CJ Sansom and Kate Mosse with its chilling recreation of the Peasants' Revolt. It offers an intelligent, beautifully researched glimpse of a more deadly, superstitious era ... 'A compelling blend of historical grit and supernatural twists' Daily Mail on The Falcons of Fire and Ice By the pricking of my thumbs ... Lincoln, 1380. A raven-haired widow is newly arrived in John of Gaunt's city, with her two unnaturally beautiful children in tow. The widow Catlin seems kind, helping wool merchant Robert of Bassingham care for his ill wife. Surely it makes sense for Catlin and her family to move into Robert's home? But when first Robert's wife - and then others - start dying unnatural deaths, the whispers turn to witchcraft. The reign of Richard II brings bloody revolution, but does it also give shelter to the black arts? And which is more deadly for the innocents of Lincoln?

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 150

Pickpick

I really liked the medieval setting and the characters but the plot draggged too much and it was a bit predictable. Still enjoyed it tho. 👍 #scaryscavengerhunt (with a witch in it) #scarathlon #teamstoker

I can't believe I never knew this was five minutes from my work. I feel a few more lunchtime audiowalks coming on. Enjoying some medieval mystery with Karen Maitland.

Oryx @IamIamIam sometimes I think it would be great to live on one, and then I remember I'd have nowhere to store my books ☺️ 6y
IamIamIam LOL, a scary thought!!! You'd really have to commit to a digital library!!! 6y

drokka I considered a tiny home until I remembered my library. Then I thought I'd just get a second one; you could get a second boat 😁 6y
Oryx @drokka perfect! One to live in, one for the library. And maybe a rope between them, in case I want to move. I'm on it. 6y
LeahBergen This looks amazing. My husband and I want to rent one of these for a holiday. 6y
Oryx @LeahBergen I've done that once, was lovely and relaxing, and lots of lovely pubs to stop off at. 6y
LeahBergen @Oryx Your mentioning of "lots of pubs" has just sealed the deal for me! ? 6y

Pickpick

The atmosphere in this book is pitched just right - I got a real feel for the superstition of that time. I don't know quite who I was rooting for though; they were all quite unpleasant characters (except for the very poor, put upon Gunther and his family). I loved the chapter headings - all little homilies on how to ward off witches, have good luck or inspire love. I might have to see if some of them work!!

My first bookpair for #historymonth is actually a booktrio. Ian Mortimer's book is well a written, witty introduction to late medieval England. If you say medieval England you say The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer actually made me laugh with some of his stories. Others are a bit less entertaining but it's a great read. And Maitland's novel about a witch in fourteenth century England is a great autumn read. Let me know your picks for #historymonth!

LeahBergen This is so great! 8y
