Read Between the Lines
Read Between the Lines | Jo Knowles
10 posts | 7 read | 13 to read
Thanks to a bully in gym class, unpopular Nate suffers a broken fingerthe middle one, splinted to flip off the world. It wont be the last time a middle finger is raised on this day. Dreamer Claire envisions herself sitting in an artsy caf, filling a journal, but fate has other plans. One cheerleader dates a closeted basketball star; another questions just how, as a "big girl," she fits in. A group of boys scam drivers for beer money without remorseor so it seems. Over the course of a single day, these voices and others speak loud and clear about the complex dance that is life in a small town. They resonate in a gritty and unflinching portrayal of a day like any other, with ordinary traumas, heartbreak, and revenge. But on any given day, the line where presentation and perception meet is a tenuous one, so hard to discern. Unless, of course, one looks a little closerand reads between the lines.

Read Between the lines By Jo Knowles

The Book starts kind of confusing if you literally don‘t read between the lines but is a great book on the scale that it connects to so many people without really trying to it kind of makes you emotional but in a good way

Initially, I LOVED this book. I love this format, of telling one unified story through a bunch of individual ones. I‘ve read another book with the format (call Violent Ends, I believe?) and this book, 100% was going to get a pick, if not for that last story. It SUCKED. Everything else was AO good, and this one was confusing and anticlimactic and unenjoyable to read and not what you want to leave readers with. But otherwise, FANTASTIC ;)

Shley9225 Ohh I think this is it 6y

Initially, I wasn‘t a huge fan of this one. I thought it was a bit crass to tie all these stories together by someone giving or receiving a middle finger. And believe me- I swear like a sailor. But as I kept reading, I realized the bigger message was that you don‘t know the battles that those around you are fighting. Remembering this is such a huge part of teaching. I am glad that Jo Knowles wrote this book the way that she did.

AmberWB @C.Perone I almost bailed at one point, and am so glad I didn‘t! 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @AmberWB That's how I felt about the last couple of books I read .... I'm blaming the incessant spring rain 😁 6y

This story is uniquely told from 10 different perspectives on one single day. The connection is the local high school. Each is connected but brings out so much individual life, struggles, actions & consequences. It leaves you wanting the rest of the story.

The intertwined and overlapping lives and stories we share, this book shows the many ways in which people relate to one another, and the depth we all contain, often unbeknownst to those around us. A light and entertaining story of school, romance, and general teenage angst.
