The City of Mist: Stories | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
19 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
Ruiz Zafns visionary storytelling prowess is a genre unto itself.USA Today Return to the mythical Barcelona library known as the Cemetery of Forgotten Books in this posthumous collection of stories from the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow of the Wind and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. Bestselling author Carlos Ruiz Zafn conceived of this collection of stories as an appreciation to the countless readers who joined him on the extraordinary journey that began with The Shadow of the Wind. Comprising eleven stories, most of them never before published in English, The City of Mist offers the reader compelling characters, unique situations, and a gothic atmosphere reminiscent of his beloved Cemetery of Forgotten Books quartet. The stories are mysterious, imbued with a sense of menace, and told with the warmth, wit, and humor of Zafn's inimitable voice. A boy decides to become a writer when he discovers that his creative gifts capture the attentions of an aloof young beauty who has stolen his heart. A labyrinth maker flees Constantinople to a plague-ridden Barcelona, with plans for building a library impervious to the destruction of time. A strange gentleman tempts Cervantes to write a book like no other, each page of which could prolong the life of the woman he loves. And a brilliant Catalan architect named Antoni Gaud reluctantly agrees to cross the ocean to New York, a voyage that will determine the fate of an unfinished masterpiece. Imaginative and beguiling, these and other stories in The City of Mist summon up the mesmerizing magic of their brilliant creator and invite us to come dream along with him.

The frickin origin story of the labyrinth! And isn't the stained glass a picture of a rose or am I wrong? I haven't gone back to look.

Ok I'm finished! But who is Laia? Is it the back story of Alicia? And is the house they go to the same one that Daniel goes to work the creepy old lady? I couldn't find which book that was in.

SilversReviews I wish I could help. I didn‘t read this book yet. Sounds good, though. (edited) 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures It has been awhile since I read the series but I couldn't remember her either. I sort of took this as a splinter story of a girl we didn't know yet. 2y
emz711 @ChaoticMissAdventures to me, the biggest push is that the same letters in her name are in Alicia 2y

Mehso-so

For those who love the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series this short story collection is a must. Some stories are stronger than others, but most of them tie back to the original series, giving us a glimpse into the lives and ancestors of the characters we‘ve grown to love. It‘s not as good as any of his full length novels, but it‘s a pleasure to return to the streets of Barcelona created by Zafón. He passed away far too soon last year.

Nebklvr So sad about his passing. I have loved these stories. 2y
emz711 omg what do you think about some of the stories! i've been trying to place them. Is Laia = Alicia? is the man in gray fermin or Leandro? 2y
AvidReader25 @Nebklvr I‘m still so heartbroken! 2y
AvidReader25 @emz711 I keep going back and referencing all the other books!!! I don‘t think it‘s Fermin because there‘s no sense of humor. 2y

#AuthorAMonth - November - Carlos Ruiz Zafón:
There is a familiarity about this book. As soon as I said the names of characters and places out loud while reading, all of the memories of a story that I refused to let go came flooding back. This was like drifting back in time to the place that I was before when introduced to The Library of Forgotten Books.??

Nute This was like meeting up again for a sharing of remembrances, yet exploring the footing of a new journey.
I was so willing to go that I forgot that some parts would probably be sad&haunting, mournful&longing, and that the melancholy would linger in recollection of the author‘s untimely death. Oh, but do I love the mythical and mysterious Barcelona? Yes, I do! And was I eager to see if things had changed or somehow remained the same?👇🏽
(edited) 2y
Nute Yes! For those reasons, it was good to go back. It was good to visit there with old friends and acquaint with new ones.
Highly Recommended!

This is the last work of a gifted storyteller. Gosh! His ability to transport the reader from here to there was mesmerizing! Yes, many writers have that ability, but the way Mr. Zafón guided his stories with such tenderness and beauty leaves the reader breathless.

RIP C Ruiz Zafón.

Eggs I read Angels Game and Prisoner of Heaven but still want to read this one too…. 2y

#AuthorAMonth - November - Carlos Ruiz Zafón:
It was a pleasant surprise to see this on the New in Paperback table at the bookstore because it‘s length is short coming in under 200 pages and there is only a few days left in November to satisfy this challenge. Also, there‘s this caveat…this book puts the reader back in Barcelona and the gothic vibe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books that began with The Shadow of the Wind.

This is happening today!

Amiable I didn‘t know about this one! Stacking! 2y
Soubhiville Oh nice! Enjoy! 2y
Nute @Amiable Right on, Ms. Amy! Much love for this author!🤗 2y

Haunting, and so interesting! Both Miguel de Cervantes and Antoni Gaudí make appearances. The stories range from super short couple of page bombshells to 30is pages slow burns. His last book and I am both so grateful for his work and so sad we will not be getting more.

Oh, sadness. The beauty and mystery of Barcelona. The wistful ghosts, cold assassins, wandering writers, and mournful lovers will never find stories to inhabit like those of Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I will never again wait with bated breath for his latest gothic invention. This last collection of stories will be published in November. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for a digital review copy. May you rest in peace, Senor Zafon. And thank you.

BookwormM I have loved all his books so sad 😭 2y
Nebklvr @BookwormM I haven‘t read all of his young adult novels so I think I may have one of those left. 2y

I won an ARC of this from a #goodreadsgiveaway in exchange for an honest review.
Of course, I wish this had been a full novel instead of a collection of short stories, but at the same time, Zafòn maybe felt the big stories had already been told and, knowing his time was limited, decided to gift us with these instead. As this was his last beautiful work from such a talented, gifted man, I could never give this book anything less than 5 stars.

perfectsinner My full review is on Goodreads. I hate the 451 character limit here 😒 3y

This book is so good you guys. Feeling super blessed to have won this. Wonder if it'd be weird to buy it once it's published, too? It'd be neat to see if there are differences...
Anyway, it's kinda making me sad a little, too, because Zafòn has passed & we'll not get any more works. But this is turning out to be a nice book. I love getting back stories to the characters we know & love.
