Emperor: The Death of Kings
Emperor: The Death of Kings: A Novel of Julius Caesar | Conn Iggulden
7 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
From the author of the bestselling The Dangerous Book for Boys Brilliantstunning, raved the Los Angeles Times about Conn Igguldens first novel, Emperor: The Gates of Rome. Iggulden is a grand storyteller, declared USA Today. Now Iggulden returns to the landscape of ancient Rome and the life of Julius Caesar in a new novel filled with all the sumptuous storytelling that distinguished his first book. Sweeping from the windswept, pirate-ruled seas to the stifling heat of the Roman senate, Iggulden takes us further down the path to glory as Julius Caesar comes into his own as a man, warrior, senator, husband, leader. In a sweltering, sparsely settled region of North Africa, a band of disheveled soldiers turn their eyes toward one man among them. Ragged, dirty, and half starved, the men will follow their leader into the mad, glorious fight for honor and revenge that only he wants to fight. Their leader is named Julius Caesar. The soldiers are Roman legionaries. And their quarry is a band of pirates who made the mistake of seizing Julius Caesarand holding him for ransom. Now, to get his revenge, Caesar will turn peasants into soldiers, building a shipborne fighting force that will not only decimate a pirate fleet but will dominate the Mediterranean, earning him the coveted title Military Tribune of Rome. While Caesar builds a legend far from Rome, his friend Gaius Brutus is fighting battles of another sort, rising to power in the wake of the shocking assassination of a dictator. Once Brutus and Caesar were as close as brothers, both devoted to the same ideals and attracted to the same forbidden woman. Now, when Caesar returnswith the winds of glory at his backthey will find themselves at odds. For each has built an army of elite warriorsCaesars forged in far-flung battles, Brutus from Rome s political killing fields. But in an era when men die for their treachery and their allegiances, the two men will soon be united by a shock wave from the north. There, a gladiator named Spartacus is gathering strength, building an army of seventy thousand desperate slavesto fight a cataclysmic battle against Rome itself. Filled with unforgettable imagesfrom the death throes of a king to the birth of Caesars child, from the bloody battlefields of Greece to the silent passion of loversEmperor: The Death of Kings is an astounding work, a stunning blend of vibrant history and thrilling fiction. From the Hardcover edition.

I enjoyed the first book in the Emperor series but enjoyed the second book even more, a cracking read. Conn Iggulden knows how to tell a good story and very much enjoying these books, even if they are Chunksters. Seem to move along quite quickly even though they are big books. The rivalries and feel of living in Rome come across very strongly. Onto book 3 as I need to know what happens next.

#Day4 of #40Miles20Hours challenge was my most productive so far, each day got better. On day 4 I did 1.78 miles and listened (whilst walking) for 36 minutes.

This brings my overall total to 5.11 miles and 1 hr 45 minutes on the audiobook, hoping to increase this further over the weekend.

Finished of book 1 if the Emperor series and started listening to book 2 whilst I remembered the story.

OwenBanner I've had that book on my TBR since the very beginning. How was it? 4y
Andrew65 @OwenBanner Very enjoyable and sets the scene well of Julius‘s early life and growing up, as well as his early challenges. Also covers well the time under Sulla in Rome. The whole series has been on my shelf sometime and decided to move forward on it. Most probably 4 or even 4.5 stars out of 5. 4y
OwenBanner Bumping it up, then. Thanks for the recommend, my brother. 4y

Marina_h I read those some years ago and really enjoyed them. I've been thinking about reading them again since I don't remember the story that well. If you like his books and haven't read the ones about Genghis Khan, they are definitely worth reading as well. 4y
Andrew65 @Marina_h Think read the first 3 of the Genghis Khan books and got the others on my shelf waiting, agree good books. Also want to read his War of the Roses series. Plenty of reading ahead. 😳 4y
GHABI4ROSES These books look like my style! And great job on the increased momentum! 4y

The second book in Conn Iggulden‘s Julius Caesar series and even better than the first! So much happens in the this one to Julius as a young man! I think Iggulden tells the story of Rome‘s complicated politics really well without getting bogged down in detail. Already onto the next one!

TK421 I absolutely loved this series! 4y
Sace I am intrigued. 4y
