The People in the Photo | 
so-soThis rating is definitely an “it's me not you“ kind of thing. I actually loved the concept of this book - a woman doesn't know anything about her birth mother, who died when she was young. Now that her father has passed away and her stepmother has dementia, she is going through their things and comes across a photo of her mother and a few other people. She posts on a forum, wondering if anyone can help identify the others. This leads to a ⬇
so-soThe secrets between two families come to light when an old photograph is found. The story unfolds via emails & letters (plus the occasional phone call & visit off page).
I found this a so-so read as neither character came alive for me. It is fairly short but there were times when nothing seemed to be happening. Overall verdict: disappointing. 2âï¸

pickA woman in Paris searches for the story of her mother, which was kept from her from her father and stepmother. The story starts from one picture that results in a correspondence. A layered love story told through the letters exchanged by Helene and Stephane.
"That woman was already gone."
Was finally cool enough to sit outside and read this lovely book at lunch today.
At the point now, where as they say, the plot thickens. Love that point where you really want to keep reading - for me usually 70-90 pages in. Secret Russian background, hidden family histories, and a blossoming romance. #bookclubbook
My #uniquefact is that I was born outside the u.s. and have lived on both coasts, the south, the Midwest, and currently reside in the heart of Appalachia. My fav section of nytimes book review is by the book (not a unique fact just what I'm currently reading). #augustphotochallenge #canadianinappalachia
Braved the rain to pick up this month's book club book from the library. It's a library pick so they had lots of copies. #bookclub #librariesrock
And as a side note, it felt like actually including photographs instead of 2-3 pages describing each one would have actually worked much better and added a higher level of emotional impact to the story.
I can see this appealing to people who aren't as determined to feel happy when they finish a book as ⬇ 5mo
