The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting
The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and The Glory of Growing Up; A Memoir | Evanna Lynch
12 posts | 6 read | 15 to read
From actress and activist Evanna Lynch comes a raw and compelling memoir about navigating the path between fears and dreams. Evanna Lynch’s casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films is a tale that grew to almost mythic proportions—a legend of how she faced disordered eating as a young girl, found solace in a beloved book series, and later landed the part of her favorite character. But that is not the whole story. Even after recovery, there remains a conflict at her core: a bitter struggle between the pursuit of perfection and the desire to fearlessly embrace her creative side. Revealing a startlingly accomplished voice, Lynch delves into the heart of her relationship with her body. As she takes the reader through a personal journey of leaving behind the safety of girlhood, Lynch explores the pivotal choices that ultimately led her down the path of creativity and toward acceptance of the wild, sensual, and unpredictable reality of womanhood. Honest, electrifying, and inspiring, this is a story of the battle between self-destruction and creation, of giving up the preoccupation with perfection in favor of our uncharted dreams—and how the simple choice to create is the most liberating action a person can take.

CSeydel Oh, that‘s so smart to do separate brackets for fiction and nonfiction! I was just noticing that NF was dominating my bracket so far - Now I‘m going to give fiction its own page 13mo

Bailedbailed

Bailing on this. To be fair there are a lot of trigger warnings, but this isn‘t quite what I expected going in. The very start of the book talks about what ends up being just this side of a rape fantasy for lack of a better word. I work with sex offenders and have never heard a story like that out of a non criminal. That really set the tone for me and I just couldn‘t move past it. Not that I‘m suggesting she‘s akin to a sex offender, but 👇

BethM Her cognitions were so clearly disordered from the beginning of the book that it felt far too much like my day job. 14mo

Last book of January. #Pantone23 #BluePerennial

This is an honest but brutal account of Evanna‘s battle with/journey through anorexia. I appreciated her approach for telling her story and her advocacy for treating the whole person not just the disorder. I think she is still searching for something and I hope she finds it.

Clwojick Great match! 14mo

The month isn‘t over yet, but so far, Evanna Lynch‘s memoir is my top read for January. Often difficult and beautifully written, Lynch recounts her experience with anorexia, the troubling ways the system tried to help her, and what it‘s like navigating the world in recovery. You needn‘t be a fan of Luna Lovegood to admire Lynch‘s story.

I of course urge careful reading as the topics of self-harm and eating disorders are discussed throughout.

Soubhiville Oh! I didn‘t know this existed! I need it, she‘s one of my favorite characters! 1y

Nothing like throwing up a couple times to get you to finish a book you‘ve been reading for 2 months! I love the way she writes and I love the way she doesn‘t glorify eating disorders. It was hard to read at points and obviously sad but I really enjoyed it. I especially love the afterword. Also it‘s so cool that she does circus!!!

At sometimes dark, sometimes light, Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood from HP movies) writes of her journey grappling with mental health issues + eating disorders, moving on to gain a role as her favorite character in HP, and her experiences as a celebrity in that regard. For being so young, she‘s lived quite an interesting life so far. Conversational + raw/genuine. Def sad, but a strong recovery is a solace. #harrypotter #memoir #autobiography

Loved it so much!!! Evanna is an amazing writer! She covered so many themes and literary elements so honestly and well! There were many emotional moments; however, they were interspersed with inspiration and humor. I did not know much about her before reading this book beyond knowing that she played my fave character in Harry Potter. She shows the importance of mental health help not only at low points but throughout life. A must-read!
