Pride, Prejudice, and Peril
Pride, Prejudice, and Peril | Katie Oliver
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Like a modern-day Agatha Christie bestowed with a hefty dollop of Jane Austen.--Laura Childs, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jane Austen meets reality TV and murder in this quirky cozy mystery--the first in a new series! Phaedra Brighton is perfectly content with her life of lecturing college students, gossiping with her best friends, and dreaming of Mr. Darcy. As a young, respected (if somewhat peculiar) English professor, her expertise lies in all things Jane Austen--but she knows that the closest she'll ever get to being a real-life Elizabeth Bennet is in her dreams. When Who Wants to Marry Mr. Darcy, a new reality TV show, starts filming at her best friend Charlene's estate, Phaedra is intrigued. And when the producer asks her to lend her Austenian knowledge as a consultant on the show, she's over the moon. But on the first day of filming, when Charlene's new husband is found electrocuted and Charlene herself is accused of the crime, Phaedra comes crashing back to reality. With murder on the syllabus and her best friend in dire straits, there's no Mr. Darcy around to help Phaedra--she'll have to get to the bottom of this mystery herself.

I admit, I really enjoyed this one. The Austen references, the play on P&P characters…it was quite enjoyable. Though it‘s called the Jane Austen Tea Society mystery series, the tea society hardly meets in the book. But, I really liked Phaedra, the main character, who has a cat named Wickham. Ha!

I did kinda guess the murderer by the end, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Promising first in the series!

I finished the last of my 2023 reading challenges today. The first one is the @cozymysteryclub. The second one is the @barnesandnoble romance.

Both of these challenges were new to me this year and both were fun.

I will be doing the @cozymysteryclub 2024 reading challenge. I haven‘t seen anything yet from BN for 2024.

emz711 How was the book? 3mo
Graciouswarriorprincess @emz711 It was just ok but disappointing . I wouldn‘t read more in the series though. 3mo

Mehso-so

The mystery itself was well-done, but idk how I feel about the characters. Phaedra seemed a little naive for a 30-something university professor, and the tension with Mark felt so manufactured. I'll probably read book 2, but it's not a pressing need. #cozymystery

Super cute cozy that mixes academia with a reality tv show. I‘m in for the second when it comes out.

TheEllieMo Is it just me, or does the character of Lizzie on the front cover look like she‘s based very much on Kiera Knightley? 1y
