The Essential New York Times Cookbook: The Recipes of Record (10th Anniversary Edition)
The Essential New York Times Cookbook: The Recipes of Record (10th Anniversary Edition) | Amanda Hesser
10 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
The James Beard Awardwinning and New York Times best-selling compendium of the papers best recipes, revised and updated. Ten years after the phenomenal success of her once-in-a-generation cookbook, former New York Times food editor Amanda Hesser returns with an updated edition for a new wave of home cooks. She has added 120 new but instantly iconic dishes to her mother lode of more than a thousand recipes, including Samin Nosrats Sabzi Polo (Herbed Rice with Tahdig), Todd Richardss Fried Catfish with Hot Sauce, and J. Kenji Lpez-Alts Cheesy Hasselback Potato Gratin. Devoted Times subscribers as well as newcomers to the papers culinary trove will also find scores of timeless gems such as Purple Plum Torte, David Eyres Pancake, Pamela Sherrids Summer Pasta, and classics ranging from 1940s Caesar Salad to modern No-Knead Bread. Hesser has tested and adapted each of the recipes, and she highlights her go-to favorites with wit and warmth. As Saveur declared, this is a tremendously appealing collection of recipes that tells the story of American cooking.

Pondering dinner……with temps in the mid 30s F 😩, something comforting & warm is in order. I was thinking MS Roast (❤️pepperoncini), but then I spied Mapo Ragu! I will bookmark both.

Kappadeemom I love Mississippi roast - make it all the time in my crockpot! 6mo
Tamra @Kappadeemom it‘s been a long time for us! 6mo

Marinated flank steak with Lime, Chile, and Basil Slaw for Sunday dinner. 😋

This vibrant slaw is in perfect contrast to the dismal wind and clouds that blew in this afternoon.

Hazel2019 Yum! 2y

Is it weird that I‘ve been waiting all week to be able to curl up with this enormous 998 page cookbook?! I love reading all the retro recipes… Shrimp Toast from 1973, Salmon Mousse from 1961, etc etc… 🍤🍸

SRWCF Fun! I, too, love retro cookbooks. 2y
readordierachel I just checked this out from the library today! I haven't had a chance to flip through it yet. Excited now 😁 2y
Kristin_Reads @readordierachel @SRWCF I knew I couldn‘t be the only one who loves these! Enjoy 2y

Texreader I enjoy reading recipes and cookbooks in general, too! (edited) 2y
Ncostell I often go down a rabbit hole Googling retro dishes when they‘re mentioned in novels set during different time periods so this book looks like fun to me! 2y
Kristin_Reads @Texreader @Ncostell Such fun! This is a great collection of recipes collected over several decades. 2y
LindaLappin an author I follow on IG , Frances Mayes, recently recommended the California Heritage Cookbook by the Junior League of Pasadena --pub date 1976, as a bible from which she learned to cook. I found an old used edition on amazon for a couple of $ and it's fabulous! uses a lot of raw eggs though, which I don't use anymore... 2y
Kristin_Reads @LindaLappin Ooh! Good to know… I‘ll have to check that out! Thank you 💗 2y

First recipe made from this tome - Apple Coffee Cake - and it‘s delicious! I made it for my husband‘s birthday tomorrow, though as you can see it‘s making a debut today. 😂

If you make this in a glass pan, bake at 350F, not 375. Also, I didn‘t layer it (why bother?) and I misread the recipe adding WAY more cinnamon, but it‘s so tasty! 😋

slategreyskies Wow, I want this cookbook! :) 2y
Ruthiella I love those happy accidents in baking! 😋 2y

Not from the actual cookbook, but the New York Times puts together a vegan / vegetarian mini-guide every year, and I've been cooking from it for at least six years. This is a "Three Sisters" stuffed acorn squash that I'm bringing to my potluck.
