USA Today bestselling author Eliza Knight brings together a brilliant dual-narrative story about Nancy Mitford--one of 1930s London's hottest socialites, authors, and a member of the scandalous Mitford Sisters--and a modern American desperate for change, connected through time by a little London bookshop. "An absolute must-read!"--Madeline Martin, New York Times bestselling author The Last Bookshop in London 1938: She was one of the six sparkling Mitford sisters, known for her stinging quips, stylish dress, and bright green eyes. But Nancy Mitford's seemingly dazzling life was really one of turmoil: with a perpetually unfaithful and broke husband, two Nazi sympathizer sisters, and her hopes of motherhood dashed forever. With war imminent, Nancy finds respite by taking a job at the Heywood Hill Bookshop in Mayfair, hoping to make ends meet, and discovers a new life. Present Day: When book curator Lucy St. Clair lands a gig working at Heywood Hill she can't get on the plane fast enough. Not only can she start the healing process from the loss of her mother, it's a dream come true to set foot in the legendary store. Doubly exciting: she brings with her a first edition of Nancy's work, one with a somewhat mysterious inscription from the author. Soon, she discovers her life and Nancy's are intertwined, and it all comes back to the little London bookshop--a place that changes the lives of two women from different eras in the most surprising ways.

I love all things Nancy Mitford, so naturally had to pick up this historical fiction retelling of key parts of her adult life. This is a dual timeline book, with a bit of a mystery in the modern portions. A lovely, enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It‘s evident that a lot of research went into this book. I had never heard of Nancy Mitford or her family before reading this story. The family dynamics, especially as it relates to politics, sounds so familiar. It mirrors what is happening today in many families, including my own. This book may not have been the most exciting read, but it kept me interested until the end.

A worthwhile read that sent me down the research rabbit hole. A dual timeline story involving Nancy Mitford, about whom I knew nothing when I started. As befitting a complex character whose life contained many trials, this is often not a “happy” story, but it does end on a positive note. I‘m glad I read this and finished it as part of #sharreadathon and #jumpstart2023

After a week that‘s been nonstop busy, it‘s been nice to have a solid hour+ to read for #sharreadathon, and also continuing with #jumpstart2023. The tagged book is different from what I expected, but very good. Hoping to get it finished tomorrow before the football games 😄

Ambersstarr What app do you use to track you‘re progress in reading? Or do you just use your phn times to track how long you have read that moment? 1y
Lynnsoprano @Ambersstarr I just use my phone timer. That‘s as high-tech as I get.😄 TBH, I usually forget to keep track of my times, so I rarely participate in readathons. But this one is special. 1y
Ambersstarr Lol ok cool… I was asking bc I have been looking into different reading apps 1y

A mention of Chatsworth meant that I had to go back through my pictures of our visit. Is it really almost 7 years ago? I do know I‘d joined Litsy just about a month before that trip 😀

I seem to be drawn to books about bookshops lately. I‘m starting yet another book for #jumpstart2023. I‘m really pleased by how much I‘ve read in the last two weeks, even though things have been crazy busy.

Engrossing fictionalized account of 2 women, connected to each other,by Nancy Mitford‘s mysterious inscription in her book‘s first edition that the present day Lucy St. Claire, book curator, inherited from her mother.Lucy comes to London on a job,& investigates the questions she has about inscription.Using both letters & narrative,Nancy‘s life periodically set between 1931-1945, is fascinating. The 2 timelines work together effectively.

Savoring my porch and coffee while reading. Another perfect day. It‘s mid morning. The sun shines, the sky is a soft blue with scattered clouds, the frequent breezes cause my wind chimes to tinkle softly, the birds are chattering in the nearby magnolia tree. #porchlife #coffeeandbooks #naturespleasures

kspenmoll All this restorative calm was interrupted by the sudden appearance of a youngish bear rooting in my garden about 4 ft away from me. I ran to the porch door & into the house.fright & excitement… my husband & I watched him through the window as he/she ambled across the street & down my neighbors driveway. The woods & the river back up to their backyard. OMG!😱 @Lesliereads (edited) 2y

I enjoyed this. An imagined novel of Nancy Mitford‘s life in the 1930s and onwards and a present day American book curator named Lucy, who goes to London to purchase books for an American collector and spends two weeks at Heywood Hill bookstore, as her London base. Lucy is also a fan of Nancy Mitford and has a mystery she wants to solve. The chapters switch between Nancy and Lucy and is well-done. Interesting. 3.5/5

This book is a dual-narrative about Nancy Mitford and her scandalous family including her two fascist sisters connected to Adolph Hitler. On the Mitford side of this book, this author did a wonderful research getting so much true and accurate. This book also has a mysterious inscription book curator in current time is trying to locate. A literary masterpiece where 2 women from different times seek the pursuit of happiness
