Apple Crush: (A Graphic Novel)
Apple Crush: (A Graphic Novel) | Lucy Knisley
18 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
After finally adjusting to life on a family farm with two brand new step-sisters, a young girl faces an even bigger challenge - figuring out where she fits in at her first year in middle school. This middle grade graphic novel explores family, friendship, and change! Jen is just getting used to her life on Peapod Farm with her new stepsisters, Andy and Reese. But when the school year starts, there are even more changes in store for her. Jen has to navigate new friends and new challenges--but at least she'll have Andy with her, right? As she starts the sixth grade, she finds that her stepsister seems way more interested in crushes and boys than hanging out with her, while Jen wants to know when the world decided boys and girls couldn't be just friends anymore. Jen's story continues in the standout sequel to Stepping Stones that captures everything awesome (and scary) about growing up.

I love Jen! She is funny, relatable, and resilient. Apple Crush does have one or two bits that I would say makes this a recommendation for older readers (mature 5th grade, or 6th grade and above), but overall is a great addition to this series. I‘m planning to check out Lucy Knisley‘s work for adults next! #applecrush #graphicnovel #middlegrades #2023

This story can be relatable to many children, and can be a faster read because it is a graphic novel. Because of this it could be a popular suggestion for the older grades. The text and the illustrations were very enjoyable.

This is a graphic novel about a girl named Jen who‘s facing problems such as her parents being divorced and having to move with her mother, adding new members to her family, and having to start a new school. Everyone at school is interested in crushed and dating but Jen is not, so this adds to even more of the challenge she has to navigate through

Jen and Andy take on gender roles, respect, romance (or an abhorrence for it), bullying (a little), and friendship as Andy falls for a boy and Jen just wishes romance would disappear. Cozy and delightful. I enjoyed adding another pumpkin-attraction-themed book to my fall repertoire. I‘ve read nonfiction by Lucy, and this was a really fun addition. The bullying subplot fizzled a bit, but the rest of the story was highly satisfying. #comics

GondorGirl I've loved all of Lucy's nonfiction, so I'll have to pick this one up. Her art is always charming and I love how many middle grade books are challenging this like gender norms. 1y

I only just noticed that this is by the woman who wrote travelogues An Age of License, and Displacement 🤯 I really enjoyed those books, and am delighted to be reading her fiction now. #Comics

Oh would you look at that; my elderly dog fell asleep in my lap when I picked her up to warm her cold feet. I guess I‘ll just have to stay up way past my bedtime and read. 😉

Another book done for #DeweysReadathon #deweyoct and the witches are out dancing! I love all of Knisley‘s work, and this is a fun (and angsty) fall addition.

Apple Crush, Lucy Knisley, 2022. Jen has to adjust to a new life with step sisters and living on a farm. She explores new challenges like family, friends, and crushes! Her step sisters are more interested in the crushes than her.

This MG GN was a #blameitonlitsy read, & I loved it! So thank you to whichever Litten posted a recent review of this. I got major PumpkinHeads vibes from it & that‘s always been a favorite of mine. I can see this having reread potential. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES #AutumnAtoZ @Texreader #witchathon @mdm139

Loved this graphic novel by one of my favorite creators. Relatable coming off age dramas and a cute fall / Halloween backdrop. Perfect read for this time of year. 🍁 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m not the target audience so I‘ll forgive this for not living up to my expectations for Lucy Knisley graphic novel. I do hope she‘ll continue writing for adults someday.

Ugh, in this sequel to Stepping Stones, the stepdad is still hot garbage.

This full-cast audiobook is a successful adaptation of a middle grade graphic novel, second in a series. You don‘t need to have read the first one—I didn‘t—yet it probably would have given me a quicker connection to the characters. Although we‘re talking about a recording that‘s only an hour long. It‘s about friendship & first crushes & a girl feeling left out because she hates all that romance stuff. #asexuality #LGBTQIA+

Cute second book in the Stepping Stones graphic novel series. I always enjoy Lucy Knisley. This middle grade series is fiction, but largely inspired by Lucy‘s childhood.

This one would be good for October if you want something light and sweet to mix in with your spooky reads. Set on a farm/pumpkin patch during the lead-up to Halloween.

3 ⭐ This is a sequel to Stepping This book was slow and a bit boring. There was a little teasing about liking a friend that can be seen in standard tween life, and a bit about starting all over someplace new. I didn‘t not get a chance to really delve into the characters. However, I did read enough to know that I don‘t care if I ever finish the book.
