Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monstersthis gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannons The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania. Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remys father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost. When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fianc, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creaturesthough he knows associating with them wont do his reputation any favors. When hes offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot thats plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice. Its one hes certain hell regret. But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom hes been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

From all the reviews I‘ve seen, this is very much a “love it/hate it” book with little room in between. So I‘ll start with four words—queer gothic vampire fantasy. Now I‘ll add court intrigue, warring houses, human hunters, monsters, family secrets. All together these ingredients make for what I found to be an entertaining read. It isn‘t deep (not every book has to be) but it is fun with lots of action. First in a series, next book out in April.

I‘ve mostly seen love it or hate it reviews for this one—definitely curious to see which camp I‘ll fall into…starting it now so I should know soon enough!

I liked the writing style and found it engaging, to start. The story was interminable. By the time I reached the 2/3 mark, I was begging for the book to be over and practically crying at how many hours were left in the audiobook. Most of the characters were complex and well developed. I was not expecting the graphic sex between the three main characters. 😳 The book could have been great if it hadn‘t been so repetitive.

And I was having SUCH a good time!
Turns out the cheap trick I loathe more than your basic plot-based cliffhanger, is the emotional cliffhanger. Having spent 500 pages of repetitive action and repugnant court machinations, the thrupple who slowly but surely earned each other's love and trust in the midst of all these challenges somehow managed to be at odds at the end of the book! 😡 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I thought I hated this twist in romance books, knowing in that context it would get resolved, but popping up at the very end of a zombie vampires book with such great humour and representation and flirtation to just RUIN THE WHOLE VIBE makes me hate it even more. 8mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I would have been quite happy to continue on to the next book, with seeking out the formidable foes as yet undefeated, I loved the lead antagonist's complicated history, and would love to see these three continue building this new relationship against the odds of prejudice around them. But between the 'oops guess we're on a break' last minute fracture in the romance, and the absolute bastard of an emotionally manipulative parent still having hooks in the main character, seemingly with no resolution, I can't see myself signing up to this particular emotional roller coaster again. 8mo
Robotswithpersonality I had misgivings when I saw 'court intrigue' in the description and indeed, I have a low tolerance for endless deception and betrayal and manipulation. Makes me feel icky.
I am grateful I got to read about the hell hounds named Candy and Vanilla and the hell horses named Peanut and Cookie. 💁🏼‍♂️

⚠️SA, gore, emotional/psychological abuse

My October GSFF book was damaged. I chose a nondamaged book replacement but it‘s not my number 😭

They sold me when the summary said the book would appeal to fans of the animated Castlevania series. I also like their cover VS the US cover.

I still love the Bone Witch series most, but this was a fun and enjoyable read. I will say that a few of the reviews said there was smut, but I was sadly disappointed as it wasn‘t nearly as smutty as I was hoping for. This is definitely a slow burn and then it got hot, but that‘s were we fade to black. I thought this was supposed to be a stand alone book, but the ending makes it seem like there should be a book 2, if not more.

Quite an adventure. I was thrilled to receive this advanced release copy of Silver Under Nightfall from Simon&Schuster. It‘s a blood spatter thriller full of vampires and creatures aplenty. A little interest romance thrown in for good measure.
